By DONETA GATHERUM LAYTON --- Sam Dato, recreation supervisor for Layton City, has been selected Grand Marshall for the July 4th Riata Days celebration. SAM FIRST became involved with Layton recreation programs when he was stationed at Hill Air Force Base. He and Jay Starkey coordinated many of the early recreation programs. Sam was transferred from Hill not long before his retirement from the Air Force. He heard Layton was looking for a recreation supervisor. He liked youth sports and the community of Layton. the job. He was hired and has been working at this second career for the past 10 years. When the recreation department first started in Layton, it consisted of a small football program, basketball and baseball. About 200 boys were enrolled in the baseball program. d This was the largest SAM APPLIED for commun-ity-sponsore- recreation activity. I t .5 ,, : UNDER THE leadership of Sam Dato, the recreation program has expanded to include girls progsoccer, Tee-bal- l, rams, adult programs, co-e- d programs, arts and crafts, gymnastics, dancing and aerobatics. This year there were 32 mens basketball teams competing and 40 mens softball Par- teams. Sam has been able to develop a good working relationship with the Davis School District. Many school facilities are used for the community programs. THE WORK of a recreation supervisor is varied. Sam does all the buying of equipment. He makes out the schedules and coordinates volunteers. He is responsible for the care of Laytons swimming pool. The city employs one fulltime assistant to Sam and 1 1 part-tim- e summer workers. About 135 volunteers assist in the recreation program.
