Desarose of Layton has the reputation of growing the best roses in the u.s. Situated on six acres of property at 803 W. 3000 N., Layton, Desarose started in the greenhouse rose business in 1973 when Bryce Bennett, Bart Bethers and the Summerhays family entered into a partnership. They received a business loan from Zions First National Bank after Bryce Bennett went through an extensive interview where the bank tested his knowledge of floriculture and greenhouses. The ground where Desarose now sits was purchased from Clyde Adams. It was once a potato field operated by George Dibble. Occasionally, Mr. Bennett still finds a potato growing the roses. among Bryce Bennett and Bart Bethers both have a doctorate degrees in botany from USU. The men formulated the idea for Desarose while completing their studies. Dr. Bethers works on the marketing end of the business while Bryce Bennett deals directly with the business of growing the rose breeding field. Rose breeding is highly competitive and new varieties are constantly being developed. Although the roses raised by Desarose are bred to eliminate the dormancy period, growth is much slower in the winter than in the summer. This is because of the reduced amount of sunlight in winter months. Desarose is expenmenting with artificial light in the winter but the costs are very high. ley have been with the company since it first opened in 1973. Expansion followed rapidly. A second acre was converted into greenhouses in 1974. Two more were enclosed in 1977 and in 1980 an additional two acres were converted into greenhouses. Today, Desaroes six acres of greenhouses includes 30 acres, each 200 feet long. Desarose can expand over two more acres but Mr. Bennett feels the main emphasis for the next few years will be in the lines of energy efficiency projects. Since the company spends an average of $30,000 pier month during the winter for natural gas and between per month on electricity, saving energy is most important This year heat blankets, consisting of a double-layere- d special woven cloth, will be installed in the greenhouses. This is designed to cut the amount of heat that escapes through the doomed roofs. Owners will also insulate all north walls. Desarose produces 3 12 million roses per year. The cut flowers are shipped all over the U.S. Texas is the biggest customer. Air shipments from Desarose leave the Salt Lake Airport on a six day a week basis. Mother's Day Was Born From A Daughter's Love There were fewer luxuries, but life was easier back in 1908 when the first Mothers Day was celebrated. Manners and values are so different today, it is doubtful that the idea of a Mothers Day could ever rear its head in 1982. So, we have much to be grateful for that Miss Anna Reeves Jarvis thought so much of her mother that she was inspired with the concept of a Mothers Day in her honor-a- nd in honor of all American mothers. Miss Jarvis got her inspiration in 1907, just two years after her mother passed away. On the anniversary of her mothers demise, Anna told friends about her memorial concept. They encouraged her. So did citizens and philanthropists in Philadelphia. John Wanamaker, the merchant prince, was chief among the citys civic leaders to support her idea. The first Mothers Day came to be oberserved in May 190- 8- in, of all places Grafton, West Virginia. Thats where Miss Jarvis and her family emigrated from.
