Who would you call as witnesses? What court cases and existing laws would you cite to strengthen your case? Ten social studies students at Layton High School recently had the opportunity to participate in a mock court situation that hypothetically tried the legal case mentioned above. WORKING teacher-adviso- r, closely with Dave Brimhall, the students spent three months preparing both sides of the case. Students took the parts of attorneys, bailiffs and witnesses. Every Higli school in Utah" has the chance to participate in a mock court experience. The case to be presented is uniform throughout the state. Student teams compete against other school teams in a real courtroom setting. Judges are practicing attorneys. Each team is rated by a panel of attorneys and social studies teachers. THIS IS the third year Layton High School students have competed in the mock court contest. Mr. Brimhall says it is a terrific experience. Students learn court procedure, how to prepare legal cases, how to sort out facts and how our legal system works. He believes through this experience every student will become more knowledgeable about the workings of our legal system. Some students might even be stimulated to pursue a career in law. The mock court is one example of many extracurricular activities offered at Layton High School through the social studies department. TWELVE students researched and constructed projects for the Utah History Fair that was held in April at the Utah State Historical Society in Salt Lake City. Dave Nielsen was the teacher-adviso- r for this activity. The model United Nations is another social studies prostudents will ject. A concrete launching ramp has been provided at 1700 South, and there are several boat docks along the river to Cudahy Lane for the convenience of recreationists. This is a beautiful section of the river, and it is relatively free of hazards. WHILE CANOEING, recreationists must have the required safety devices aboard their craft: personal floation devices for each person, bail bucket, paddles, and first aid kit (recommended, but not required). The Utah State Division of River Parkway, canoeists and other recreationists who may be using the Jordan River this spring should exercise caution during the high runoff period.
