Show I i - WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MAY 6, 1 982 Forget The Jinx, This Is Fun Keith Duncan Journal Sports T he ' Sophomore jinx was buried the first time Kenny Heath picked up a bat this season. The multitalented Layton High junior, who enjoyed success last year, is doing it again and having more fun than ever. He has to be the best player on our team, heralded coach Brad Hawkins, who wasnt a bad prep player in his day. In my few years of coaching, Ive never had anyone who has so much fun at a game and still go out and be so good. Its players like Heath that keep the Lancers in the running for another high finish in the state baseball playoffs. Layton entered a playoff this week which could net them a bert in the tournament. Maybe we are a little closer as a said Heath. team this year, Last season we were adjusting to a new coach, but this spring we began working on techniques at first rather then getting familiar with a new person. or Heath, he didnt quite know how to react last season being a sophomore among a group of seniors and juniors. This year we are all one, its a neat feeling, he said. The characteristics of last season's Region One championship team and the squad this year are varied. Heath believes that a year ago the Lancers were blessed with a full line-u- p of good hitters. This year it is the first portion of the line-uonly, that delivers the big blows. p, A consistent hitter with a rifle-arfrom the mound or as catcher, Kenny Heath is heralded as the finest catcher in the state. m In pitching, Brad Merrill has surprised everyone, including himself, and blossomed into a skilled hurler. Even Brett Talbot and Mike Kilbum have come a lot further than expected. Overall, we all believe we are just as sound as last year and can go a long way in the playoffs, said Heath. Falcons Test: tangled Layton out of an interwined mess of two Roy runners on base with only one out in the game's final inning. g It took a stab in the infield by senior Mike Bunting to pull that victory out. "At the plate I feel much more relaxed and Ive been able to hit the curve much better." said Heath. ILenny . would like nothing better than to flex those batting and fielding muscles on the state playoff turf. game-savin- It would be special for the fans to see Heath who has been hitting baseballs like a carpenter smacks nails. The talented catcher-pitche- r has been hitting above .600 all year and has a .630 average. As far as catching, the leagues players and coaches respect Heath so much that not many have tried to steal bases. Last year Kenny had a number of throw-out- s but it appears the opposition has learned their lesson. "Everyday I'm looking for something new to learn. Coach Hawkins is teaching me new stuff eery game because there s a million thincs to learn." said Heath Hitting isnt the only thing Heath can do, however. He may be the best catcher in the entire state, one that has yet to be stolen upon and one that has a rifle arm that stops others in their tracks. But dont stop there! Heath has extended his services to the mound where he comes in as relief. He doesn't throw with the velocity that some do. and doesnt brag about any specific pitch, but Heath simply gets the job done. T When prep baseball puts away the bats for another year Heath will continue to play through the summer and have just as much fun as he did this spring. When it comes time to prepare for football you can expect Heath to be the first or second one there. Though blessed with a desire to compete and win. Heath is ery humble about it all. He has made many friends in two years at Layton High and the future only looks better. win he over Roy several weeks ago is just one example of Heath's and his teammates heroics. 'f Auto Package. Dixon P. Consider the following facts: the Falcons have beaten all of the field in dual meets. Flint and his troops have finished ahead or at least tied Region One schools in major meets this year. Why then, will it be such a tough challenge0 Consider the momentum that Bonneville and Layton have had in recent weeks. Dave Brooks of Weber says his 1982 group is the best he has ever had. What if Richard Davis of Roy decided not to run this week, would that help or hurt the Falcons0 The talented Royal sprinter has worked out only once since the Weber State Invitational and Sky View could throw some curves that would upset some plans. j. j' Farmers exclusive 3060 Why not check with Farmers today! con-secuti- j with TX he medlay features a very solid Weber. The Roy senior has beaten J.C. VonCollin of Clearfield in the past and might do it again. Alan Holyoak of Clearfield is also a top contender after finishing fourth in the BYU Invitational. Other strong shot putters include Bayer of Clearfield, Buttars of Bonneville, Ludwig of Bonneville and Stevens of Layton. J.C. Von Collin and Roys Rob Thomas will compete in the discus event. J.C. won the title at last weekends BYU event, but Thomas took the title in the Davis High Invitational. Other strong discus throwers include Bosgiter of Bonneville, Allsop of Weber, Rob Browning of Clearfield and Mike Martin of Layton.
