Show 1 WEEKLY NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MAY 6, 1982 REFLEX-DA- VIS High Honor dje n? rmrinq The following students hae earned a place on the high honor roll and honor roll of Layton High School for the third term. They are: Layton Complex Answers it could have been. Dear Layton Resident. IM RUING this letter to the Editor in hopes that I can clear the air on a few issues that have been printed in the paper. Mainly the letters about the Community Center Proposal. I would like to address these letters individually beginning with a letter under the head line "Layton Wake Up appearing March 11,1982 from Gwenda A. Peters. V Mrs. Peters claims that City Officials are flooding the papers with information which leads you to believe that a majority of citizens desire a recreation complex. TO ANSWER that, 1 know of no city official that has written or requested that the paper print any information on the recreation complex issue. It is true that there have been various articles written in the paper, but these are the result of the press being at meetings of City Council where this issue has been discussed. The media has requested information, and we have tried to provide accurate information to them. Mrs. Peters also questions the surveys taken. Let me address each survey one at a time. THE FIRST questionnaire sent out was done at the request of the City Council. It was not designed to be a scientific study, but a study to show if there was any interest in a Community Center. I personally drew up the survey and I will take the blame if there is any to be taken. It was sent out through the schools,' and all grocery stores in Layton were given several hundred. The newspapers even printed a copy and asked people to fill them out and send them in signed with the age of person completing the questionnaire. Of those returned, 496 answered Yes to the question would you like to see the City of Layton build a community recreation center?" There were 64 who said no. THE SECOND question asked would you support a bond election to pay for the construction of a recreation center? 423 drew a response of yes, and 130 no. This particular questionnaire was not scientific in nature, nor perhaps distributed as well as When results stopped coming in, I took it to the council and it was then felt that an additional study needed to be done, so a second survey was decided upon, this time on a better, more statistical basis. A graduate class from BYU was asked to compose a survey and compile the results, making a recommendation to the city based on the survey findings. BYUS SURVEY was conducted on a more scientific level. With the help of the Planning Department, they di- vided the city into seven zones. Two to four students went to those areas and surveyed homes, 380 homes were contacted. The results were interesting and in the words of the surveying group very positive about the community center. A copy of the survey is avail- able for public inspection. Each city councilman has a copy, and Mrs. Peters had a copy for three weeks. She appears not to have understood the survey as the figures quoted in her letter are totally wrong. HERE ARE a few examples: The majority of people were 3 to 40 years of age. A total of 5 people under 20 were respondents, 109 were in the 20 to 30 age group, 123, 31 to 40 age group, 100 between 40 to 55, 26 in the age group and 17 in the 65 and over age group. six percent of the group surveyed were married males. Thirty-sipercent were married females and the others homes. 46.96 percent said yes, 13.62 percent said no and 39 percent said they were not sure. Please note a total of 47.89 percent said yes to a bond election, 12.63 percent said no, 39.47 percent said they were not sure. THE BYU Study made these recommendations: . The city of Layton should build a recreation complex. 2. All age 1 groups, including senior citizens should be considered in the programming and building of such a facility. 3. All forms of cooperation should be explored for the initial financing of the community center and proposing a bond issue should be given serious consideration. In summary, let me say again that the Layton City officials are not trying to force something on anyone. Myself, the Park and Recreation Commission and the City Council feel that Layton residents should be given the opportunity to vote on such a vital issue. If the residents want the complex fine, if not that's fine too, but let them decide at the polls on May 18. P.S. you still have time to register to vote at the County Clerks Office in Farmington. 1 Richard L. Another interesting fact f surfaces; over the one-hal- people surveyed have lived in Layton for over five years. THESE ARE other interesting facts about the community center. Eighty-thre- e percent of the people surveyed want to see a community center. Also 82 percent of those people owned their own homes. Ninety-four percent of the renters are in favor. Eighty-fou- r percent of the people who lived in Layton over five years said they wanted to see the center built. Aid Mountain Climbers The Hill AFB Detachment 4, 40th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, provided helicopter assistance in res- cuing four mountain climbers from Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon April 23. THE HIKERS had climbed the mountain the day before and tried to come dow n a different route, becoming trapped. The hikers used a CB radio to contact the sheriff s office and notify them of their predicament and location. When members of the sher- iff s office arrived at the scene, they called for Air Force assistance. In the meantime, they built fires to keep the hikers warm until Hill's team got to the site and removed them by helicopter.
