DAVIS stopped the normally explosive offense of the Red Devils cold by stopping the option running of Spring-ville'- s quarterback, Scott Phillips, intercepting three passes, and pouncing on a pair of fumbles. Quarterback Jim Hess made the Davis Highs famed double wing formation work with the precision of a finely tuned machine. ALL THREE running backs, Jepp Webster, Kelly Beckstrom and Bob Payne pounded the Springville defense for huge chunks of yardage as the efficient front line produced huge gaps in the Springville defense. The Darts received the kickoff driving 68 yards with Beckstrom taking five yards Champs: Start With D? youre a betting man find someone to bet you on the 3A championship football game this Saturday and bet him that the team that wins will begin If with D. Northerners will be the Darts from Davis. ing . I against IFtHJSTORY repeats itself war then the northerners, Davis, will claim the 3A crown. But remember all those bumper stickers around, The South will rise fifl'lfbis again. These two teams have quite alot in common. First, both teams rely on a ball control offense, they dont like to try tricky stuff but both have the capabilities of breaking a big play. HAVE BOTH stingy defenses who love to destroy opponents and keep them from the endzone. Finally both squads humiliated their opponents in last weeks semifinal contests. Dixie earned its chance to the championship by downing Jordan 34-- Davis earned its chance embarrassing by DIXIE boasts one of the best runningbacks in any classification in the state with Scott Reber. This big fullback demonstrated last week that he has the size to run over SPARKLING cas 764083jl8250388 mDtflMM) people and the speed to go around them. The Flyers also are one of the few, if not the only, team to have alternating quarterbacks. Both Ron Read and Chuck Ence see action as the Dixie signal caller. ADD TO these names in the backfield Gary Allred and the Flyers can boast one of the finest backfields around. Davis isnt without their heroes and stars either. The now famous double wing offense is run by quarterback Jim Hess. Running backs for the Darts include fullback s Kelly Beckstrom, and Jepp Webster and Bob Payne. wing-back- , THESE FOUR backs run Coach Cullimores offense to near perfection, correction last week it was perfection. To prove the point the Darts took the opening kickoff on their own 30 yard line and marched right down the field as if Springville werent on the field to score. Hess also leads a gang of proud defensive players. It was Hess that picked off two Springville passes to stop scoring drives. A third pass was intercepted by linebacker Steve Criddle, a punishing tackier that every coach dreams of having in the middle of their defense. ONE DEPARTMENT that could cost the Darts the championship could be the specialty game. Dixie proved they work hard on their kick returns last week when Reber returned a kickoff 80 yards untouched for a score. The Darts can't afford to let the Flyers score with the specialty team. If this is any hidden incentive going into the game it THIS YEAR the battle is in the north country, so favor the northerners to win this one. That would put Davis in a familiar role, the state football champions, dw Springville was thwarted in the last of the second quarter by an interception by Hess. first of the third quarter Springville drove IN THE & and up 1714 N. Well its about time that the basketball talent from the county got their share of the ink. THREE FORMER Davis County ballplayers have found their way up north and are currently listed on the Utah State varsity basketball team. They are Gary Malmrose and Rawlee Perkins, both Bountiful High graduates and Dean Hunger from Davis High. Malmrose is the oldest of the group being a senior this year. He has earned three varsity letters in basketball for the Aggies. Gary is listed as a 62 guard. NEXT IN the line of seniority comes Rawlee who will be a sophomore this year. He is listed as a 6 guard. Although the youngest of the group Hunger is the biggest. Dean is a 68 freshman forward this year for the Aggies. Malmrose has had a somewhat complexing career with Utah State. As a fresh- man he saw considerable varsity action and the coaches labeled him as one of the best passing guards that the school had ever had. Then in his sophomore year Gary got off to a slow start and lost some of his confidence in his abilities and during the year logged a lot of time on the bench. LAST YEAR however Gary regained that confidence and began playing the type of ball that he is capable of doing. He soon became a starting guard again last year and he figures high on the coaches plans for success this year. Last year, his first with the university, the coaches really didnt know what to do with Perkins. He practiced with week with them. the coaches they want Perkins with the varsity. are especially They impressed with his speed and quickness. Dean record Hungers speaks for itself. As a junior he was very instrumental in helping Davis win the 3A basketball championship. As a senior he lead his club to the championships again, but this time they finished second. MANY COLLEGE coaches and recruiters listed Dean as the best big man to graduate in the state this past year. The coaches at Utah State are hoping that Dean can make the adjustment from high school basketball to college ball in a hurry. With all the mention about the local lads playing football and now with the locals playing basketball its easy to see where the college recruiters can look for their future players, dw Second For Freshmen At Davis : Davis High Freshm'an Football team captured the second place title in the Davis County Ninth Grade Football League for the 1976 football season.
