Show Page Two - The Pyramid - July 3, 1996 Merrill Ogden & Calvin Hobbes 0 MM ENT AIRY Avoid home fireworks Proud to be an American TSA holds summer event approximately 12,000 people are injured in accidents. Over 40 percent of these injuries happen to children under 14 years of age. Firework injuries usually result in burns to the eyes, face and hands. Utah law allows the sale of some class C fireworks for the summer, however, the law only allows the discharge of these fireworks three days prior to and three days following the Fourth and the Twenty-Fourt- h of July. The law prohibits fireworks that explode, propel more than ten feet in any direction, or shoot sparks higher than ten feet. Some illegal fireworks include: firecrackers, bottle rockets and roman candles. There are more fires and injuries caused by bottle rockets than by any other firework. These devices can travel up to 200 miles an hour, fly in many directions and explode in midair. The Utah Safety Council urges people to avoid home fireworks and to attend public firework displays. For those who plan to have home firework displays, here is a list of precautions. Always light fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from onlookers, houses, cars and flammable materials. Never light devices in a container. Light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting. Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks; soak them with water and discard them. Never allow young children to use fireworks. Even seemingly harmless sparklers bum at 1,800 degrees fahrenheit and can cause disfiguring bums. Do not allow any running or horseplay while fireworks are being used. Establish emergency procedures before you begin. Have water handy, and teach children to "stop, drop and roll" if their clothes catch fire. Well, I suggest that theres a lot to those ideas and practices as we get up each morning and go forward to have a good day, or as we strive to lift others or strive for better relationships and especially as we strive to serve others who depend on us for their physical, social and mental well being. Whether you are a caregiver at nome or in a health care facility, g of the its vital to the one you are serving and to your g to have positive own thinking. I try to emphasize to our staff at Canyon Hills Health Care "no stinking thinking". If youre a promoter of "stinking thinking", youre going to have a bad day, and so is everyone you may contact and have an influence. Ive heard it said that some folks are their own prophets; they prophesy that theyre going to have a crummy day, and sure enough, they accelerate their thinking and consequent actions to fulfill their prophecy. well-bein- well-bein- The tagging period ends this, week, July 6, for 4-and FFA sheep and hog projects to compete at Cedar City or the State Fair, according to a Utah State University Extension SerH Adminstrator Canyon Hills Health Care Center Mariel Porter sings with State choir Ftn Green news Duane and Claudine Anderson, Sandy, were recent visitors of Merline Morgan and other family members. Chronic stress, anger, depression and anxiety can alter your bodys chemical balance which seems to weaken the immune system. The level of immunity-enhance- d "fighter" cells decreases, making your more susceptible to illnesses. Try to recognize the stressors in your life and create solutions Be good to yourself. Remember-"n- o stinking thinking". Ron Nielsen 1996 brings us to 220 years since the Declaration of Independence. Can you believe that its been 20 years since we celebrated the bicentennial in America? Tomorrow is Independence Day, an honored holiday in Sanpete. There will be parades and pageants; flags and festivals. Feelings of patriotism will be in many hearts. There are Sanpeters who have experienced times of war where the concept of liberty became more than an abstract principle. A speaker in church on Sunday implied that because of his wartime ordeals he felt that he and others like him were unfit for society. Not true! I believe our society needs more people who understand the costs of freedom. Thomas Jefferson wrote, "What country before ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion?... The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure." (Nov. to William 13, 1787-LettStevens Smith) I would hope that we could become wise enough to find an alternative fertilizer for that tree of liberty- MT. Terms like "sovereign citizen" are tossed around. Like I say, I dont know what to think. Are these people the new patriots who will blaze a new trail of freedom and lift the yoke of the IRS off the public? Or are they deadbeat parasites sucking blood out of the rest of us? Just what is a patriot in Sanpete in 1996? Since Im a fan of lists, here is one that expresses my opinion: A patriot: 1. Salutes the flag and recognizes it as a symbol of freedom. 2. Votes and attempts to influence good lawmaking through the system. 3. Contributes to society (doesnt expect government to do everything, but believes private efforts alleviate the need for government intervention in the lives of the citizenry)4. Picks up litter instead of litters. 5. Respects fellow citizens and the law. 6. Pays fair share of taxes. Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence a few hours before his old rival John Adams. Fifty years earlier as the drafter of that Declaration, he wrote these famous words, "We hold these truths to be that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable right; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness..." taxes are & service! 25 North State, Fairview, Utah 84629 and MORE!!!!
