Show 1 JULY 15, 1986 L, Exchange student is glad to be back home By JOYCE WINTERS KAYSVILLE - How do you adequately tell someone else about a ten month experience in a foreign -- land? You really cant, but Scott Majors has come to appreciate Kays-villhome, America and his own personal growth in ways that will affect him the rest of his life. Scott is a 17 year old senior at Davis High School, the son of Max and Anita Major. He participated in the ASSE foreign exchange program, and lived with Manfred and Gerlind Rompf and their 15 and 16 year old sons in Essen, West Germany for ten months. Essen is the fifth largest city in Germany, located in the Ruhr Valley area close to Belgium and Holland. The first ten days were spent in language camp with other Americans learning a little language and customs. After that it was to his host family to sink or swim.' The first two months he felt like he was sinking. To be surrounded by strangers, different food, foreign language and customs was pretty overwhelming. Then the language started to come and Scott was able to pick up more from school work which was all taught in Germany, except English and French classes. He was in advanced math and physics classes along with other studies. He attended school, aftera ten minute train ride and mile walk, from 8 a.m. to 1:20 without any breaks. The only activities in the whole school was orchestra and a small newspaper. Sports classes were held two afternoons a week after school hours. The only sports competitions were those held among the classes in the school, never any between different schools. In order for Scott of fill up lonely hours, he got into sports classes which included fencing and ping pong. Ping pong is very big in Germany, and extremely strenuous, the way they play it. Scott would often leave the games feeling as though hed raced ten miles. Wednesday duly 16th 10 A.M. e, extra-curricul- ar Scott found the school system extremely different, with students taking their studies more seriously than here. They also keep the buildings colder, requiring the layered look for warmth, not just appearances! Besides learning the language and living the culture, Scott espe- - First 25 Customers to enter will receive a s5 Gift Certificate (Must be over 18 yrs. of age) SCOTT MAJORS dally loved the experience he had while traveling. He spent two weeks in Switzerland skiing and - traveled by bike into Belgium and r- Holland. Maybe his most learning experience in what freedom really is was the week he spent in East Germany. He visited with an LDS bishop at a chapel connected to the new LDS Temple in East Germany. The members there give up good jobs, schools and their study place because they will not renounce God or accept Socialism. They are not allowed to proselyte or pass out religious literature. Scott said that because of the excellent reputation the LDS people have, a church and temple were allowed to be built - something quite miraculous. He appreciated his host family and learned a lot from them. His host mother was an excellent cook, who cooked from scratch. The big meal of the day was served at 2 p.m., then each evening, the supper consisted of homemade wheat bread, sausage, cheese, milk and honey. His host father was a Lutheran minister. Scott enjoyed the religious discussions he was able to have. As Scott looks forward to his senior year at Davis, an LDS mission, hopefully in another foreign ! will be observed again this year.
