There will be a feeling in the center or home. Dont be afraid to ask questions. Be hasty in retreating if the provider doesnt let you inspect, for any reason she may give. Also retreat if her prices are too good to be true. You usually pay for what you get . Try to drop in at lunch time to see if what they How do you KAYSVILLE choose someone to care for your most priceless possessions? When both parents or a single parent must find child care, it should be one of the most carefully made decisions that a parent makes. Often, because limited finances dictate, a parent shops around for the cheapest price of care available, and leaves it at that. So many times, the unlicensed next door neighbor becomes the childs provider. That may be a good decision for the childs welfare, or it could be disastrous. How does a parent know? Are there guidelines and help in knowing what to look for? According to the State Day Care Association here are a few things to help in that important decisionmaking process. Do you want lots of playmates for your child, or just a few, or none? After deciding that, then you find a center, a home licensed for six of 12, or you find a woman, or nanny who will tend just your child or children. The law requires any person tending more than two children in addition to her own to have a license through Social Services. The license, in a way says to you, I care enough about your childs welfare that Ill open my home or center to anyones scrutiny. By calling Social Services or Utah State Day Care Association, you can find providers in your area. They can usually tell you the hours and days the center or home is open for child care. The next step is to visit the home or center and look for the following: are there more children there than should be? (you want an honest person tending), could all the children get out of the building quickly in case of a fire? Some tenders have been known to relegate the children to a basement with no say theyre serving is really being served, if not, ask why. A center makes very little profit because of the employee child ratio, and all the standards imposed by the state. So most centers are very conscience of giving you the most for your money. They have not opened a center to get rich, theyve opened a center to give quality care, because they know the standards and profit before going into business. TREASURELAND DAY CARE employees in Kaysville learn first aid skills from Kaysville Fire Chief Bret exits. Is the building or home clean? Usually that says your child will get the same meticulous care. However some providers have been known to care more about the outward show than they care about spending time with your child. Also keep in mind in a home situation, the provider often times goes about her household duties while the children play among themselves. Whereas in a center, the teachers are hired to spend all their time with your child. Many home providers leave their household duties to spend all their time with the children. Some centers and and homes provide learning activities. You need to decide if you want some, all or no structure for your child. One of the main differences be pre-scho- ol tween a center and a home provider is the inspection by state officials. A center is inspected frequently by a city fire marshall, a health nurse, a health environmentalist or sanitation, and the state social services licensing agent. A center must also carry liability insurance. Many home providers think their home owners insurance would cover any law suits, but most would be found sadly lacking. A center is required to have a food handlers permit, for each employee and a current first aid safety certificate. Last but not least is the provider or providers warm and loving. When you visit, do you see caring, involvement in activities, and a happy atmosphere among provider and children? Stay long enough in Centers such as Treasureland Day Care in Kaysville also offer summer day camps for older children, provide swimming lessons, go on outings, and go to movies as part of their summer program. It may also be comforting to know that only .01 percent of all child abuse cases come from licensed day cares. So when you see a widely publicized story, remember, that figure, and know the chances are very slim that your child will ever be in danger if hes in a licensed facility. Take the time to know what environment your child will be in if you need child care. Take the time to ask questions, and visit several homes and centers. It isnt always possible to get to know your provider before you enroll. Try to remember you get what you pay for. That extra $20 or $30 you pay for quality care may be the safest, best money youll spend on that priceless possession, jw 17-ye- Clipper to fignt battle for rights ow Continued from page one 7-- before this legislation is considered by the full Judiciary Committee. The Founding Fathers had great faith in the common people . They gave to us a legacy of hope. He spoke of this land being choice above all other lands, and that liberty, security and prosperity can only be ours as we serve the God of this land. He asked us how can we repay our forefathers, and how can we preserve the freedom in this land? Only by being righteous - the one indispensible ingredient for Liberty.
