Sunset was third with 48 and North Davis was fourth with Sports Editor LAYTON - Thank goodness there arent any laws in the land to break up monopolies in athletics. Even if there were any, theyd still have a tough time breaking up a good thing at Central Davis Junior High in Layton. The Cubs, as they call themselves, capped off a brilliant year or two in boys and girls athletics a couple of weeks ago by sweeping all three first place trophies at the Davis District Junior High Track and Field Championships. Winning is just the name of the game here. Central Junior has won at least one district championship in every girls or boys sport with the exception of volleyball over the past couple of years. Said athletic director Bart Johna reflection of the kind of son, kids we have here and also a great indication of the kinds of coaches we have that are dedicated to helping the kids be the best they can be. For most of us, its really great to be a part of a school that has as much pride as we do. The tradition 42. -- Winners for the ninth grade boys included Pat Maes in the 100 meter hurdles (15.28), Matt Denning in the 200 meter dash (24.01 ), the 440 yard relay team of Maes, Derek Wright, Todd Adams and Mark Bowers; Denning again in the 400 meters and the mile relay team of Maes, Adams, Bowers and Karl Hall. The mile relay squad set a new district record of 3:45.32. Other outstanding performances among ninth graders included Wrights second in the 110 meter hurdles; Halls second in the 800 meter run; Dennings second in the 100 meter dash; Adams third in the 100 meters; Bowers second in the 400 meters; Cameron Johnson's third in the 1600 meters and Scott Brimhalls second place in the high jump. 'Its just keeps getting stronger and DUNCAN CORRIE PHELTS AND Becky Butler helped bring Central Junior a fifth straight district championship. stronger. Johnson also credited much of the schools success in athletics to the support from the schools administration which is made up of Dr. Stephen Ronnenkamp as principal and Rod Green as vice principal. At track recognition ceremony last week. Dr. Ronnenkamp said of Youre the the participants, greatest kids on earth. It was an awfully good spring for the Layton junior high who swept first place trophies in girls track and field and in both the ninth and eighth grade track and field. The girls actually made it five years in a row with their victory, all of them achieved under the direction of Debbie Dickson. In all the girls have now won eight of the past ten district championships. According to Johnson, he said, Thats a monopoly if Ive ever seen one. Reuben Cunninghams boys enjoyed victories also, ninth and eighth grade style. This years ninth grade team nearly doubled the output of the second place team, Farmington and with the eighth win, it appears Central Junior might be the team to beat next year as well. Debbie, the wife to Davis High football coach Jim Dickson, said her biggest fristration this spring was her girls frustrations that Jim Couldnt attend all of their meets. Over the years, Jim has become a specialty among the girls. But because he helped as an assistant at Davis High in their track program, it kept him away from most of our meets, said Dickson. But the Central girls must have survived. The Lady Cubs built up a total of 133 points to easily outdistance second place South Davis who ended with 67. North Layton was third with 46 and Farmington was fourth with 32. Sunset and North Davis finished fifth and sixth respectively with 26 and 18 points. Dickson said her '86 team was perhaps the easiest team I've ever coached. She elaborated by The impressive thing is saying, that they really got along so well. We never had any squirishes and no one got booted off the team. That was pretty unusual. Then too, this group had a bunch of talent. But not only did they have talent, they worked hard as well. They worked as hard as any group of kids Ive coached." The Central girls never had a close dual all year and despite the fact they appeared to be running the score up on the opposition, it wasn't that at all. We were just said Dickson, plain unbelievable, Kinda like a dream team that finally came true." A big reason for Central's success was the performance put forth by ninth grader Corrie Phelpts. She ended up taking first place in the 100, 200 long jump and was a member of the 400 meter relay team along with Lisa Flitton, Jennifer Gooch and Danna Denning. The 400 meter team set a new district record time of 52.11 and Phelts also set a new standard in the long jump by leaping 16 feet and 8 inches. Its interesting to point out that the 400 meter teams time would have placed third in the high state meet held last schools weekend at Weber State and Phelts 4-- A long jump record would have state complaced second in 3-- A meet petition and fourth in the among girls. Thats not bad at all for ninth 4-- A graders. Phelts, who is to be a sure top-notch performer in high school, couldn't break her own records in the 100 and 200 meters w hich she , had set as a seventh and eighth grader. on the team Phelts, a along with Becky Butler and Candace Nalder, was quoted by Dickson as being, the most talented girl Ive ever coached and maybe even the hardest working kid. Central won the eighth grade division with a score of 98 points with Sunset in at second with 84 points. The Cubs had four first place winners in the eighth grade ranks as Totaro won in both the 400 meters and the 200 meters. Talbot picked up a win in the 800 meters DUNCAN THE CENTRAL JUNIOR boys program was led by these captains; ninth grade, Matt Denning, Pat Maes and Mark Bowers; eighth grade, Shaun Talbot and Pat Totaro. and finally it was Barnett winning the high jump. in Many times wed all be heading toward the gym to get showered after practice and Corrie would still be practicing her long jump or said Dickson. something, But Phelts scored only 40 points of the 133 total. Another outstanding performer was Becky Butler, also a ninth grader. Becky set a new district record in the 100 meter hurdles (16.17), was a member of the 1600 meter relay team along with Kael Lomax, Jennifer Lomax and Jennifer Gooch (which also set a new district record of 4:28.54), was second in the high jump to teammate Sheri Fay and was third in the long jump. At Central's year ending awards ceremony, Becky earned the Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year Award while Phelts took in her third straight MVP track award. There isn't too much that Butler can't do, said Dickson, She is not only a good athlete, but she is also a good leader. Gooch concluded a great junior high track career as well. Her favorite race is actually the 400 meters where she finished third. She is a member of two record setting relay teams and was third in the 200 meters. In the ninth grade boys division, Central won with 116 points over Farmington who finished with 60 Wagstaff: A real champion By KEITH DUNCAN Sports Editor LAYTON -- - John Wagstaff can be considered a hero in his own right. The lanky Layton High senior capped off a brilliant year in track last Saturday afternoon when he gutted it up and won the 1986 1 hurdle championship. That kind of event, that kind of winning, wasnt even in his realm of thinking three years ago when he 4-- A first entered the Lancer track program. But Wagstaff, perhaps one of the hardest working and most dedicated athletes Russ Jones has produced during his tenure there, never gave up during his initial year. He came back again and again despite finishing last even among his own teammates. A serious injury took its toll his junior year, which left little time for competition. The question on most everyone's mind was whether he could come back and do anything at all his final year in a Layton uniform. But it wasnt a question in mind whether hed come back or not, it was only a question of how well he would do. John won the region crown a week ago with a personal best and came back Saturday afternoon with a very impressive win over Wag-staf- fs hurdlers and for two years in a row its allowed them to finish among the top four at state. This year the Lancer crew finished fourth with 50'j points, which was fourth behind Hillcrest (the champion), Clearfield and Woods Cross. And again next year it appears Layton might have strength in the hurdles. But perhaps if the sport itself could say thanks, it might be bowing down to a couple from Davis High, both Kurt Black and Clay Singley. mine, said Singley, It was great to get off such a good throw at the Later on Wagstaff finished second in the 300 intermediate hurdles, finishing second to Hillcrest s Scott Urban. Urban ran his best race ever, said Jones, We thought hed hit a few hurdles down the stretch, but didn't. But John also ran his best time ever so he really cant feel frustrated, he did a super job. Urban's 300 IM race came within two-on- e hundredths of the state record, even closer than any time posted by last years great, Terry Kealamakia. I believe John has a good chance of going on to college action next year, said Jones, Most because John wants to get there.
