That Christ of Latter-dameant the family that was still under the roof went with them. The Smoots have a long history in this area of being highly skilled athletes and winners. Ever since y . They soon learned they had a competitor and a winner on their hands. WHEN SPRING rolled around Shandell found a sport that interested him, although he had never seen a game played let alone played in one. Soon the Lacrosse coaches at the school were asking the question, Are you sure youve never played this game be- THE HIGHLIGHT of the season for both the school and Shandell came in the final game of the season against their cross town rivals. It was Shandell that intercepted a pass and returned it 37 yards for the winning touchdown. After football Shandell took his talents onto the wrestling mats. By now the athletes at the school realized they had a jewel on their hands and showed Shandell their respect for him by electing him a captain. Viewmont became a high school it seems there has been a Smoot participating and playing major roles in the athletic and academic programs. season went on it became apparent that Shandell was one of the best in the area, since he had no losses. Then came the big Jones Invitational tournament but Shandell caught the flu bug and was beaten out of the title by a single point in two overtimes. AS THE ALL OF a sudden though Shandell found himself in a strange setting but he made the most of it. Being the only Mormon on the team was something different for : Shandell but he soon gained the respect and admiration of his team- mates through his actions both on :and off the field. : The coaches at Hastings Middle Even though in Ohio, Shandell Smoot is carrying on the family tradition of winning on and off the field. He gained some revenge in the area championships when he met up once again with that opponent with Shandell winning the title easily. This win gave him the title fore? Hastings lost their opening game of the season but then reeled off 12 straight wins with Shandell becoming the leading scorer with 2 goals. THIS FANTASY year came to a close for Shandell on a high note with the school honoring him as the outstanding athlete as voted on by the studentbody. Shandell has another task in front of him this coming year. Pres- ident Smoot is being moved to Kirkland, Ohio, about 200 miles from Hastings so once again he'll be the new kid on the block. The Hastings coaches are sick over losing this great athlete from Utah but the Kirkland coaches are excited. THE SMOOT family will spend two more years in Ohio and then Shandell will be back with all his friends, as a junior at Viewmont. The Viking coaches can't wait. He would practice for hours a day while his friends occupied their time doing other things. Later tragedy stuck when he broke his back long jumping. My question remains wheretsvQonzaga? THE TWO questions go hand in hand since John Stockton played basketball for Gonzaga. The reason the questions surfaced last week is simple, the Utah Jazz surprised everyone by making John their first round draft pick, the 16th player selected overall. The Stockton pick was a complete surprise to everyone except the Jazz people. The Salt Palace crowd simply didnt know howto react to the pick because no one had heard of this 61 point guard. FRANK LAYDEN was very honest concerning all the secrecy surrounding this pick, we spend a lot of time and money in scouting and making our selection. If people find out who you are going to draft they start looking at that pick a little closer simply because another club is interested. They start thinking that maybe they missed something about the player. We knew all along that he was our first pick we just never told anyone. We didn't lie either, no one asked us if he was our pick. SOME OF the media had brought his name up a couple of weeks ago and all they got from the Jazz was the fact that he was a good one. The only player the Jazz wanted more than Stockton, according to the list supplied the media by Frank, was Jay Humphries, but we knew the Suns would take him before it got time for us to pick. ALL OF a sudden, after the announcement of the pick and the silence that followed, people started saying what a great pick Utah had made. Marty Blake, the gugu of NBA scouts, indicated the Jazz made the steal of the draft. LaDell Anderson, who had been back at the Olympic trials, noted he felt Stockton was the best player in the trials. No one had a bad thing to say about this kid. The big question then becomes how did he last until the 16th pick if hes that good. It was a good draft with some great players in front of him. He fits in well with our game, running, PAINTING Investments Co.) In the highlight film shown on the NBA draft it showed John scoring, I wish it would have shown him passing because thats what he does well adnitted Frank. The more the crowd heard about this pick the more they liked him. Oh, sure there were some who felt the Jazz should take people like Michael Young, who were still available but the Jazz people knew what they were doing. WE LOOKED at our needs and he was the best available athlete. We need help in the big forward but we have adequate backups to Thurl in Wilkins and Boswell but we really felt like when Rickey came out of the lineup we had a big letdown.
