Kimberly Butterfield spent the in New Jersey past seven-month- s employed as a nanny for a Jewish Orthodox family, Zvi Devorah Weiss. She cared for their three children. Kimberly is the daughter of Roger and Sand Butterfield, Kaysville. WHEN KIMBERLY returned home last week she brought with her a medallion of Penelope Stout, who is a prominent ancestor of Mrs. Butterfield's fathers line. She gave the medallion to her motheras a special gift, which has a significant meaning. In 1976 these medallions were made in honor of Penelope Stout, who has a museum built in her honor as the First Lady of Monmouth Beach, Jew Jersey. The museum is located on Shoal Harbor in New Jersey. THE STORY of Penelope Stout is a heart rendering experience. Penelope Von Princis and her husband were shipwrecked on Sandy Hook in 1638, when she was 17 years of age. Found by the Indians, Von Princis was scalped and killed. Turning to Penelope, they gave her a fractured skull, a hack cut her open across the abdomen and left her to die. Having the will to live, she crawled into a hollow tree. Days later she was found and saved by a kind Indian who took her to his wigwam and nursed her back to health. After two years, she was released from captivity and later met and married Richart Stout in Gravesend, Lon Island. Seeking religious freedom, which the Dutch brought by government refused to grant, she prevailed upon her husband and his friends to sail across the waters to meet her Indian friend and to scout the land, making maps while they camped along the land. Fifteen years later, the Indians agreed to sell the land to Penelopes friends. They bought all the land that is Monmouth County, part of Ocean County and part of Middlesex County, making the purchase of Manhatten Island for $24, (an expensive real estate deal). PENELOPE Stout bore three daughters and seven sons and died at the age of 10 in 1732. She had over 500 descendants at the time of her death. Thomas Whitlock, builder and 1 friend, built the first house in 1663 becoming the first permanent resident of what is now New Jersey. This first house is now a museum. THE PENELOPE Stout Museum of the Crafts of Men was built to preserve their heritage. The Shoal Harbor has been untouched by the modern world beyond the creek. Across the bay is the dramatic view of New York City. Along with this famous museum is the Sky House Complex at Shoal Harbor in Port Monmouth, New Jersey, which is on the state and been called to serve an LDS mission. He will enter the MTC on July 12. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Grant Seegmiller.
