Show Sunday, June 27,1971 THE HERALD,Provo, Utat—Page 27 Arts and Letters Unique Brass Rubbings Collection Given to ‘Y’ 4 ANNUAL SUMMER A collection of 45 brass rubbings has beca donated to Brigham Young Ur:iversit: by Mrs, Edna Morgan, who spent years in her native England preparing the rubbings. Mrs. Morgan, who has worked the last three decadesperfecting the rubbings, says she doesit SALE! just as a hobby. ENTIRE STOCK BRAND NEW In England alone, she said, there are approximately 4,000 brasses to work from. The brass sheets, engraved with a likeness of the deceased, werelaid in the floor of churches, similar to a tombstone or in the walls of churches in honor of the departed person. This method of honoring the dead was popular in the late 13th century through the middle of the 17th century. Thebrass sheets were madeof an alloy of copper and zinc and were beaten into rectangular pieces on hich the figures were pounded vut. Since brass defies time, andresists all attempts at disfigurement, they haveexisted until today in excellent sha according to Mrs. Morgan. Thefigures represented wellto-do merchants, noblemen, and ladies, Altnough their facial charac‘eristics were not followed exactly, their costumes were reproduced in great detail and remain as a valuable record of the fashion of that time. Rubbings are produced by tapingfine paperoverthe brass, then rubbing the surface with a special wax. A relief likeness of the figure then appears on the Paper. According to Mrs. Morgan, originally the imprint was made of soot, beeswax and tallow mixed together and done on white paper, but now different colors of paper and wax are used. She prefers the gold wax on black paper since this makes the imprintlook like the original brass. ‘Thetallest of Mrs, Morgan’s rubbings is five feet, and the smallest only six inches high. dresses JANEY LUKE OF PROVO,as the elegant ami “Unsinkable Molly Brown,” who married a silver mining fortune in Denver, sings with two cast members, Noland Dennett, left, and ».
