Show Page 2—TdE HERALD, Provo, Utah Sunday, June 27, 1971 Court Issues Warrant; Offthe Beat Clarence Erdmann: His Life Was An Inspiration sy JOSEPHINE ZIMMERMAN Clarence Erdmann, @ le electrician for more than 50 years, died this week. The Daily Herald carricd an obituary which listed many of his ai lishments, but it really couldn't tell the story of a truly remarkable individual. It is a story which can put most of us to shame whenwe begin to feel sory over the problems we face. Mr. Erdmann had been paralyzed in his legs since the age of three. A year later his father died, and his mother had to support herself and her two small chiidren. Clarence learned to sew by helping his mother operate the pedal of an old— fashioned treadle machine. Later, he took over sewing chores, operating the machine by tying a stocking to the pedal and pulling it with one hand while maneuvering the fabric with the other. Devised Method He wentto school. . a little wagon by sigteertood children. Hoping to walk, he tried braces, but they failed. He and his mother saved money to buy a wheelchair, and his early and later years were spentin the wheelchair. However, he was determined to walk, some way. Pride ir Work His wife recalls that he always ‘took great pride in his work and di¢ the kind of job that made people willing to hire him again. ‘When automobiles came into popularity, he made his own vehicle, using bicycle and automobile parts. Later he drove regular automobiles, creating his own devices for manipulating the brake and gas pedals, His driving record was unblemished. He loved water sports, and was a charter member of the Provo Boat Club. Adapting his skill as a cabine: maker,he built his own craft, including outboards, inboards, runabouts, and sailboats.
