The eight-point splurge put the Mustangs seven points ahead at the time. But Northwestern came within an aceof pulling out a tie when Al Robinson punched through the middle of the SMU line for a touchdown. SMU's lead held up only because Bill Planicek’s extra point attempt was wide. The win, first for the Mustangs on a Big Ten gridiron in 19 years, was hard earned and came despite several bad breaks. The Mustangs jumped to a 13-0 lead but they weretrailing 20-13 when they started the march from the Northwestern 38 late in the third quarter.
