New Mexico 23 Cougars’Overpowered by San Diego State By MIKE T' conversion. The Aztec’s decision to receive after winning the coin toss was rewarded early as Jon Robertson teok Joe Liljenquist’s opening kick-off 96 yards for a touchdown with the game just 14 seconds old. The small, elusive return specialist appeared to be stopped in a crowd of Cougars at the 30 and again atthe40 yardlines, but he stayed on his feet and hadan openfield for the Herald Sports Writer San Diego State was held to minus four yards rushingin tiefirst half butstill coasted to a 31-11 victory over Brigham Young University before more than 36,000 fans at San Diego Stadium Saturdzy night. BYU's only momentof glory camehalfway through the final quarter when the Cougars becamethe first team in 19 quartersto score against the Aztecs. The Cougars got good field position on a 47-yard kick-off return by Chris Farasopoulos from BYU's 13-yardline to the Aztec 44-yard line. Rick Jones then directed the Cougarsto the one, where Kip Jackson dove over for the score. An interference penalty against San DiegoState had given BYUa first down on the 14-yardline to set up the Cougar score. After the touchdown, anillegal procedure penalty against BYU was nullified by an Aztec off- sides. Jackson then also scored the two-point Al Limahelu added the extra point as the Aztecsspotted sevento nothingtostart things off. The Cougars threatened early as the result of a fumble by Aztec quarterback Brian Sipe who washit at the San Diego State 40 yard line. Three off-side penalties helped starting quarterback Dave Coon movethe ball to the 22 yardline. On fourth down, Liljenquist was short on field goal attempt from the 29. San Diego State found the Cougar line, especially Jeff Lyman, tov tough to moveagainst on the ground, but a Cougar fumble and holding penalty set up an Aztec field goal with 7:30 left to play in thefirst quarter. Coonwas hit from behind as he looked for a receiver, which jarred the ball loose right at the feet of Tyron Youngs on the BYU 40 yard line, BYU held, forcing the Aztecs to try for a 34-yard Limahelu field goal, which was good for a 10 to nothing lead. San Diego State offense was far from impressivein tnefirst quarter, but so was the Cougars’. The Aztecs cameto life in the second quarterbehindthe pinpoint passing of junior Brian Sipe, who was overshadowed last year by Dennis Shaw. Sipe was9 for 15 in the first half for 207 yards, compared to 2 for 13 for 23 yards by the Cougar trio of Coon, Rick Jones and DonGriffin A 13-yard touchdown pass with 13:51left in the second quarter gave the Aztecs a 17-0 lead —Limahelu added the extra point. Midwayin the quarter, BYU threatened to becomethefirst team in 16 quarters to score against the twentieth ranked Aztecs. Rick Jones led the Cougar attack from his own 39 yard line to the Aztec two. The drive was highlighted by a 31-yard run by Sophomore Pete Yan Valkenberg. However, once inside the 10, the Cougars tried three times unsuccessfully to run overtheleft side of the Aztec's defensiveline. The Cougars were able to salvage field goal moments later after a poor San Diego State punt. Joe Liljenquist kicked a 32-yarder to cut the Aztec’s lead to 17-3. However, San Diego State proud of the fact thatit has the nation’s longest unbeaten streak, now at 26 games, added another touchdown on a 78 yard pass from Sipe to Tom Baker. Limahelu’s kick was again good with 2:51 remaining in the first half. The lackluster third quarter featured both defensivelines, BYU stopped the Aztec’s only threatat the seven yardline on a fourth down play. ‘The Aztecs addedtheir final touchdown with 10:30 left in the gameona five yard pass from Sipe to Tim Delaney. Limahelu’s conversion made it 31-3, The score was made possible by a 37-yard pass te Ken Burrow. BYU's defensive line did another commendable job, although the secondary could not contain the passing of Sipe to receivers Baker, Burrowand Delaney. BYU threatened again as they reached the 14-yardline in the final minute of play. BYU's last surge was spearheaded by the running of Chris Reading and passes to Lucky Fleming, Golden Richards and Heaps. = The BYU cause was supported by the Cougar Band and pep groups who performed both before the game and during halftime. In overall statisti he Cougars gained a total of 245 yardsor offense as compared with San Diego State's 367.7 San Diego State hadnointerceptions, but BYU had one. BYU quarterbacks managed to gain 121 yards passing which wasn’t good enough against San Diego State's 321. Watts | Cookin Sunday, By JOE WATTS Thehigh schoolfootba! 1] season in Region Four has been one of the mostexciting races in recent years. Five teams have beenin the thick of the race, and four teamsarestill within a half game of each other in the chase for the championship. American Fork leads with a 5-1 record, while Beats Utes Spanish Fork, Orem, and Payson are each 4-1-1. American Fork’s onl: loss was a 10-7 upset at the hands of Springville. Spanish Fork’s only loss was Friday to American Fork 20-12, but it also has a 14-14 tie against Orem. Orem’s only loss was a 20-0 shutout at the hands of American Fork, along with the tie with Spanish Fork. Payson’s only loss was a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Orem, along with a7-7 tie with Provo. Which team is going to win the championship? A look at the remaining gameson the schedule might give an idea. American Fork has probable wins over Pleasant Grove and Carbon, and a tossup contest with Payson the final week. Spanish Fork has two tough contests against Provo and Payson, and then a breather against Uintah. Orem has three gamesit should win against Uintah, Lehi, and Carbo n. Thus Orem has an excellent chance of finishing the season with a 7-1-1 record, while Spanish Fork and Payson have a much tougher schedule to finish with the same record, It lookslike thetitle could all hinge on the Payson at American Forkcontest during the last week of action, which could open the door for the Orem Tigersto at least share a part of thetitle. As far as post season playoffs are concerned the PaysonLionsare already assuredofa spot in the Class A bracketing. The Lions are the deiending champions in Class A and looklike a good bet to capture the title again. Of course, Jim Durrant’s crew wouldalso like to win the Region Four championship for the second straight year, which could be another real feather in their hatt. In the Class AA ranks only twe teams are going to advance io the playcffs, which meanseither American Fork, Spanish Fork, or Orem are going to end up onthesidelines. Spanish Fork has got the toughest schedule of those three teams, andso the Donsface an IOWA STATE HALFBACKWillie Harrissprints out of reach of twe Ute tacklers to the single Cyclone touchdown in the 16- 13 gamethey won in Salt Lake City.
