Show DR GOWANS AT THE tabernacle last sunday afternoon dr gowans superintendent of the state industrial school at ogden delivered a splendid address on the responsibilities ot of parenthood there was a very good attendance but it is indeed a pity that every young man and woman ot of the city was not present to get the advice that was given dr gowans stated that young people growing up should determine the things most worth while and then support that thing with their whole sou soul 1 never disregarding any advice or assistance that will aid them in 9 getting etting tile the most out of the thing which has been proven to them to be w worth orth while the first necessity in life is making a living but while that is absolutely necessary it is by no means the greatest thing in life ind and ones entire time should not be spent in that occupation A man who desires to enter a profession spends years in preparation expending largo large sums ot of money in order that ho he might be perfectly qualified for the labor how much time is spent in making preparation for parenthood the greatest of all professions and the greatest thing in in life worth while it is not fair to the he generations that come after to enter that profession unprepared every young man and every young lady who has arrived a at t the age of 19 years should be in the parents classes of the sunday schools that they might receive the training there given to fit them for the responsibilities which they soon will assume the speaker told of instances where children had become incorrigible because the parents did not make home more attractive than the street and because fathers paid too much attention to raising hogs grain or looking after business interests to tho the neglect of their sons such fathers should spend three hours a day less looking after their business aff affairs lairs and give the extra time to becoming more thoroughly acquainted with their families rallies fa parents are altogether too ready to turn the training of their children over to the teachers in the public schools and the organizations of the church there is only one place in al tho the world where a proper foundation for or a noble life can be laid and that is in the home by the time a child la is six years old 75 of all the things it does it does as a result of habits already formed train tho the minds of the children and they have better minds nothing more train their moral side in the home and they will have character the wealth of a state and nation consists in its citizenship not in its minerals and agricultural product young girls should be trained to understand der stand the care of little babies in order that they might know what to do in case of sican ss for there Is n greater percentage of infants die than any other class all tor for the lack of a little knowledge ignorance disease and sin and tile the three worst plagues of this life and the world will not be redeemed until the people are redeemed from these evils when we redeem ourselves then it is time for us to commence work on somebody else one way in which this can be brot brol about will be by bringing into the world a superior race of children who in turn will make a superior race of parents to bring into the world a still more superior race ot of children we will get a superior race of children when we get a superior ran race of parents not before A perfect confidence knoud be established between parents and children 90 of the cases that go to the industrial school are the result of unsatisfactory conditions in the home sometime the fault of the parents sometimes not the speakers remarks were listened to with rapt attention president stohl presided over the services and the sacrament was administered by tho the bishopric of the first ward during the passing ot of which elder frank W Fis fishburn liburn read the eth chapter of galatians Galat lans the choir rendered several musical numbers and the prayers were off offered ered by elders J D call ind and T 11 blackburn Glack burn |
