In Baseball Playoffs REBATE Viewmont Beats Hillcrest, Not Varoz By KENT SOMERS Review Sport Editor SALT LAKE CITY It looked like a yawner, the kind of game where you sit back in your concrete shelf in the stands, catch some sun and occasionally glance at the field and then to the scoreboard to see what youve missed. Viewmont was beating Hill- crest Monday in the state playoff games with Hillcrest batting in the top of the seventh inning with one out. Time to fold the blanket, take a high school seventh inning stretch and head to the car, right? Well, pardon the Huskies, but they spoiled many fans lazy summer afternoon by hitting two singles and bringing Brett Varoz, who had hit a home run and double already in the game, to the plate. Varoz then took a Kevin Smith curve ball over the center field, wall to bring Hillcrest within one run of Viewmont, But Smith had no trouble with 6-- i he hit was a curve. .' 4-- A 2 6-- 5. the next two hitters, who chance to' give his club more freedom on the base paths, and the Vikings stole several bases during the game. Weve been doing that all 'year, said Edwards. We were hit and running when he (Hansen) hit the home run. Hillcrest opened the scoring in the top of the first when Varoz doubled and was then brought home on a single by Bill Robertson. Viewmont scored two of its runs in the bottom of the first when second baseman Steve Caputo walked and Hansen singled. A wild pitch, an error and a single by Smith all combined to score Caputo and Hansen and give the Vikings a lead. Viewmont added two more runs in the third inning on Hansens homer, which knocked in Doug Scovel, who had singled. Caputo singled in catcher Lane Rozema in the fourth inning and Doug Lee hit his sec great hitter., Despite Varozs hitting per- -' formance, Edwards decided not to walk him to load the bases in the seventh inning. If you walk him, you would walk in a run and give up a home run and its over, Edwards said. He hadnt hit the ball that well in the tournament, but he sure did ; today. Edwards also said that Smith pitched a good baU game although he gave up five runs, the most in his three putings in the I think the heat tournament. a to little bit, said him got Edwards. Hes not used to the sun. Smith concurred with Edwards. I was tired in the third inning, the senior right hander said. The Vikings were also able to hit the ball Monday, collecting nine hits, including a home run by shortstop Danny Hansen, and didnt make any errors in the field. The added amount of base grounded and flied out to the shortstop, and the Vikings had won their third tournament game. Smith again pitched a good game for Viewmont, picking up his third win in tournament play and helping the Vikings advance to the game against Bingham Tuesday, The' only, trouble Smith had ' Hes just a runners gave Edwards the ond single 2-- V? v Sales & t0 Service for Guaranteed 2 Day Repair an any mower or tiller, 5 Miner Tune Up 3 jl JR', mm mb(3 IQ) t$2& SoccerfPro A LITTLE LUXURY 7 t coder Utezctte 837 500 Cal!
