Show I 2B Golfers Hold Tourney At Spring Meadows Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, Apr. 20, 1983 Baseball Squads fteach Halfway By KENT SOMERS to beat Clearfield last Friday The Lancers have defeated the Falcons twice this year by the same score and are alone in first place in Region One with a record. Clearfield is now tied for second place with Roy and Weber 0. Rviw Spout Editor With the yearly spring chartered migration of major-leagu- e baseball players completed and their season still in its infancy, the high school season has reached middle age. Taking advantage of the clear but cool weather last week, local high school teams, often unpolished because of the recent bad weather, were able to actually play baseball outside. After all, thats where it was designed to be played, even in Utah where the difference between spring and winter is as fuzzy as bad television reception. Balls glided between legs, hit chests and sailed over heads, often deciding the games. But not all the games were played badly. Layton High used the long ball well, one long ball 4-- 1 with 3-- records. Falcons 2 Coach Ken Hicks said his club has been hitting the ball well, but his pitching hasnt come around yet. But against Lay-toClearfield did a quick n, 180-degr- turn. The Falcons had trouble driving runners in from easy scoring position, but Greg Folk, who gave up a home run to Laytons Jeff Moon, and Jeff Parry pitched well. But both Layton and Clearfield must beware of Roy. After ' losing all three ' pre-seaso- n games, Fred Thompsons Royals are now 2 in the league and 3-- are playing better baseball, mostly because the weather has given the Royals an opportunity to play, said Thompson. Senior lefthander Kirk Jensen in region play with is now wins over Bonneville and Sky View. The Royals have four of their five remaining games at home, an enviable position for any team in a title race. We are where we thought we would be, Thompson said. In Region Four, the Woods Cross Wildcats are where they had hoped to be alone in first place after the first half of the season. According to Val the Wildcats have combined good pitching and hitting The to bring their record to only loss was to East early last week. Viewmont and East are tied for second place in the region rounds. Fred Pehrson finished third with a 76 and Rob Martin nabbed fourth with a 77. 6-- 4. Davis is in fourth place with a record, but will face a tough time this week when they play Woods Cross and East. Bountiful is in the regions basement with a record, but the Braves played well at times last week and could be a determining factor in the playoff situation. For Davis, the key to making the playoffs could be eliminating errors. In games against Highland and Bountiful last 2-- 3 4 ' 58.
