therefore send the following some months ago I 1 learned through elders rose and robinson the bouts of my relatives I 1 wrote telling them of my visit to england and my business while here an invitation to visit them and spend a few weeks eek s in their midst was contained in their reply I 1 gladly accepted the kind invitation and on january got out for my field of labor in chester field en route for Sun Sund ecland via sheffield baesley and leeds I 1 intended to walk to Leeds but in the following way I 1 managed to ride most of the distance A friend offered to pay halfway fare to sheffield if I 1 would deliver some goods at that place for him so I 1 accepted the oner and proceeded on my journey I 1 sto stopped ed over night with a family named tarr warr arising in the morning feeling well and ready for a long walk but a heavy rain forced me to take ret ref uge in a coach as far as chape from there I 1 walked to hoyland common whet e elder roberts and mr jarman held their debate calling upon sister mcphail lt who wanted mt me to stop and have tea I 1 told her I 1 was in a hurry and bade her good evening alter after thanking her for her kindness toward me J I 1 again took up my tramp to birdwell visiting the builte family they invited me to stop over night but I 1 told them I 1 WAS bound for higham to attend mutual and if they would put P ut me on the right trail Iwo I 1 would tild see them later they did so and away I 1 flew with a piece of mince pie in my hand on a dark lonely road I 1 nad had never traveled before ia d went on in mud and slush for one hour ho and thirty minutes as last as I 1 could walk and at last I 1 found myself at the meeting room door just as the choir began to sing 0 my father I 1 went around to the back door and was welcomed by sister glover who soon lad some supper ready tor for me I 1 entered the meeting room and met elders call crawford and maddison aloo aldfo a good congregation A fine program was welt well rendered which gave satisfaction tion to all present I 1 next took up my journey in company with the other brethren to barnsley our headquarters and soon found the land ot dreams next morning elder call conference presiding nt told me to stop over sunday 40 ft attend meeting which I 1 was pleased to have the privilege of doing sunday came it was still cwg snowing haicl ard in company with elders skid skia abre and crawford I 1 attended sunday school at higham I 1 took dinner wit drother brother brooks returning to afternoon gue meeting eting with him I 1 had the privilege of speaking to the saints for a short aa upon the glorious plan of life and salvation that we are presenting to the corid Si sister litter lee invited me to tea and while there I 1 talked with her husband upon the gospel we went to evening meeting and again felt the peaceful in influence ence of the spirit of god in our midst mid st el dem skidmore and crawford addressed the congregation we dismissed feeling that the desires of our spiritual appetite alite were satisfied we returned to marksley ma rasley and retired for the night monday january I 1 took the tion train for leeds Leed sit it being too stormy to 0 o walk arrived at xa ao noon I 1 pur chased a ticket to sunderland Su and looked around the city of leeds at I 1 boarded the north eastern leeds express for sunderland until we reached stockton where the train was derailed which caused a few moments delay once more ready readi for business we steamed forward toward our destination I 1 had bad a pleasant conversation with a commercial mercial traveler regarding rai reading bere acre and at home it was bitter cold ahe he snow now and then dritt drifting ing in in upon as s which made it very uncomfortable tor lor passengers geTs having no stoves or heat beat ing apparatus I 1 in the distance we could hear the porters crying sunderland which caused my heart to rejoice I 1 stepped out ot of the car and made for the street enquiring ring the way to hendon A gentleman n told me to go straight ahead then urn turn to the right and keep to the left and inquire when I 1 got there I 1 thanked him for the information and proceeded on my way as fast as I 1 could on the frozen snow being nearly frozen myself at last I 1 came to a shop and ventured in meeting my aunt who had never seen me before but seemed to know me as soon as I 1 spoke she told me to go down to the house and there I 1 should find my uncle who would make me welcome I 1 obeyed and soon found myself at my fathers brothers fireside whom he had not seen since 1859 they expressed themselves that my arrival was more like a message from the dead than anything they knew of I 1 received a hearty welcome and made myself perfectly at nome home my cousins soon come in in and we spent a pleasant evening together I 1 retired out but could not sleep I 1 had to tell my cousin with whom I 1 was rooming about the gospel that god had bad restored to earth through the prophet joseph smith he asked many questions regarding my message I 1 I 1 caught cold on my trip and was blinded for two days as a result then I 1 was unable to speak for a day or so but finally it left me as suddenly as it came elders rose and robinson came to sunderland to hold meeting on sunday january aist and I 1 succeeded in getting three of my relatives to accompany me to meeting in the evening at which I 1 spoke upon the principles or 01 the gospel and bearing testimony to them elder rose and I 1 hurried to the sta tion after meeting to catch the train tor for shields arriving a short time later at the newcastle headquarters finding elders smith galbraith Galbra tn booth and challis chalais at home we talked over our experiences for a while and retired the tol following lowing morning we took a trip to tynemouth Tyne Tyve mouth castle that was destroyed by cromwell a walk along the sea se a shore to the places that bad been damaged by storm a few days previous end ing with a ride acres river tyne in a row boat on tuesday vt e went to newcastle and spent a day looking around the town visiting the old castle seeing many old war implements also some anglo saxon parchment etc we returned to south shields tor lor the night the next morning brother rose and I 1 started for sunderland Sunder lana on foot and had a pleasant journey we visited my folks and put up with them for the night we then went to hetton betton in a snow storm arriving a little dam finding elder robinson with his hand in a sling but otherwise enjoying the best of health together we walked on to south hetton betton visiting the distort diston family and taking tea with them I 1 bade them all good evening and boarded a train for whence I 1 proceeded on foot to Grains town calling on brother bartie to find his little girl sick I 1 hastened to hendon purchased some oil returned and administered to her and she felt better at hendon I 1 received a card from my cousin a lady preacher for the church of eng and rescuing army at stockton on tees inviting me to come and spend a few days with her at the vicarage I 1 I 1 spent the afternoon with her and in the evening accompanied a local preacher andl Bible class teacher to a concert at his expense we took a walk up into the gallery sillery and sat in a corner to have a gospel aspel conversation we began by comparing comp aning our articles of faith etc he found that to disprove our doctrine was an impossibility so he be asked my age in this way are you six and twenty do you think so said 1 I well said he from the way you speak I 1 would at least judge you six and twenty I 1 told him my age but he could hardly believe I 1 was so young and remarked you have reached your high standing in the church early in life why I 1 have two years to spend at college yet v et before I 1 am on equal footing i in n our church well said 1 do you know that we do not receive our appointment with a college training but in the same manner aaron was call preached beliet belief alone while I 1 preached that works were necessary so you can imagine the resti rest as time and space will not permit a description of the scene in the evening two of the lady preachers accompanied me to our meeting and seemed very much taken up with the gospel I 1 aso exhibited the views of zion to a large crowd at the vicarage explaining the bes I 1 could all the points of interest they were particularly taken up with zions fair daughters and the beautifully finished photos of brothers C R sava savage 9 e and C E johnson joanson Job these lady preachers have read the tr tracts acts and are now reading the voice of warning and book of mormon they took me to an entertainment and I 1 had tea and supper with them all the time talking about the gospel and its restoration I 1 have a home both in sunderland and stockton when I 1 am in that part of the country I 1 returned to barnsley feeling repaid for my journey but a little under the weather my labors have been a pleasure so far and trust that they shall always be so I 1 began my missionary mission career while sailing on the die atlantic and hope to continue in the same until honorably released to return home I 1 increased in weight while on oil tho the water and today I 1 am twenty pounds heavier than when I 1 left salt lake six months ago I 1 have also walked more mom in in that time than in
