Tom Dial Granger Citizens Have Much To Gain With City Status Bv Rebecca Dicken Dear Editor: Without even knowing any of the facts and figures surrounding the question of incorporation, one should be able to see clearly that the citizens of West Valley have a lot to gain by becoming a city. What otherarea in this valley that is not already in a city, has such a high of industrial and retail business houses? We all know that, this factor is whattakes the tax burden off the home owners by supplying revenue to pay for municipal services. And we know that the revenue that is now generated in the West I believe President Carters call to reinstate registration for the military draft is a good idea. In these troubled times it is senseless not to be prepared to defend our country. I am not a war hawk. I am appalled by the idea of war, I've read many books about the subject and my darkest nightmares often revolve around shooting and killing. It is probably my worst phobia yet I cannot argue with Carters call. This country is a fantastic place to live and I get upset when I hear people say they would not fight for it. Personally I think I would be a terrible soldier. However I would not argue with the idea of drafting women to serve as nurses or clerical personnel. It is too bad congress did not consider this option. People could probably accept the idea of women behind a desk more easily than in combat. I believe radical social change would have to arrive before women would be drafted as soldiers. As we near the 4th of July celebration I think everyone should think seriously about our country and the freedoms which make it a great place to live. People have died for it in the past and it just may become necessary in the future. Their lives were not lost in vain. It makes me mad to hear people arguing against reinstatement of the draft. In case we are attacked or our vital national interests are in danger I think we should be Valley area County. all goes to the Another item to think about seriously. ..Why is most of the pressure for disincorporation coming from outside our area? One can hardly miss the bias points of view that come from the major downtown news media. And the County pressures are hard to overlook especially when the Fire Department, Sherrifs Dept., the County Attorneys and the Comoffice, missioners have demonstrated their eagerness to discourage our endeavor toward independence. If we didnt rely as heavily on their energy perhaps lives could be saved. Isnt it worth it to cut your driving to save a life? On the upcoming 4thof July holiday I think we should all consider the freedoms and independence which make this country great. It took tremendous courage to sign the Declaration of Independence. I wish all of our servicemen could be endowed with such courage. We have the greatest country in the world, I am proud of it, I love it and I want to keep it around. It is too bad it has become fashionable not to be patriotic. I think the Vietnam and Korean Wars may have had The comments that from these sources are quite in contrast when you consider that almost By Lois Knutsen Last year, three days after the 4th of July, I set foot in the valley to begin my career as a journalist for Stahle Publications. I remember the first time I drove down 2700 South in Magna, this was July 9th. The parade was over, the streets had been cleaned up, but one very prominent decoration was still visible and it drew my attention everywhere I looked. The red, white, and blue bunting along with their welcome banners waved in the breeze and I thought how nice it all was. As I was getting to know the ropes in the office I was shown many pictures that our photographer took during the recent 4th celebration and it was hard to choose which ones we would put in the paper. My admiration and respect for your community began to grow when I saw shots of hundreds of people lining the streets as they watched the parade. It was hard to believe that for such a small town so many people turned out. From the copy that went into that next issue of the Magna Times everyone obviously had a good time that day. This year Im proud to be right in the middle of it. I listened to the planners go over their itinerary. Weve arranged for special printing and made sure our building would have one of those colorful banners. Beginning with the Lions Club breakfast, early in the morning people will be able to fortify themselves for a daylong schedule of events. The parade is the big thing but it doesnt end with that. There will be baseball games, a carnival with rides, races and contests, with the day ending in a fireworks display. It sounds like fun. I hope no one misses any part of it. If you see a lady with a camera around her neck, its probably me. Come up and say hi lets celebrate our nations birthday party together. j WeVe PROUD to live in flana |
