great deal of pleasure if he could meet with the brethren often in this capacity our mission here was to establish the zion of god upon the earth and we should all labor according to our might mind and strength V to this end this body of men might be properly called the bone and sinew the helps and government to the presidency of the stake and author aties of the church our duties and responsibilities are very great in the sight eight of the lord lor I 1 we have been delegated by our elder brother jesus christ to officiate in his name uron upon the earth no greater commission could be given to mortal man than this then what man nor ner of men ought we to be as presiding officers in a stake war ward quor ams of priesthood or otherwise he spoke at some length upon the duties of bishops and their counselors in their official capacity and reminded them that if they desired to be possessed of influence they must be examples to the people it is not enough for a bishop to dis burse tithing and the te people but he must pay his own tithes and offerings faithfully he stated that the presidency of the church had directed from time to time that the bishops should receive supplies from the tithing for the support of the poor and be desired that the bishops would make their applications for this purpose by the time specified in order to save confusion and irregularity at the general tithing office elmerjohn elder Elde john rJohn C cutler superintendent of sabbath schools in this stake gave some excellent instructions upon matters pertaining to sabbath schools and earnestly desired the aid of the bishops in securing good and efficient te teachers scherer persons who would be faithful in the discharge of this important duty and asked that an influence be brought to bear upon our c hildren children to prevent them hom desecrating dese crating the sabbath by indulging to in sunday excursions and otherwise he recommended that our toys boys be taught to perform manual labor early in life and not kept at school until they were twenty and twenty five years old and then put to learn a trade for in nearly every instance it would prove a failure they then would consider themselves above manual labor and would engage in some of the professions or nothing at all president joseph E taylor read the revelations touching upon the subject of tithing and quoted the words of the covenant made with the lord by joseph smith and oliver cowery cowdery nov to be found in the history of joseph smith and remarked that this might be considered the starting point of this important law in this dispensation but it was not until july ath 1888 that the law of tithing was fully revealed he read a revelation given eiven july 1838 wherein the powers of the higher and IA lesser iamer mer Priesthood Priest hoods 8 combined in regard to the disbursement of tithing are clearly defined in support of bishop Pres prestone tons remarks in i r regard to tg fast offerings he said that if the brethren would be more inore diligent in their attendance at meeting upon fast days he did not doubt but the spirit would rest upon the elders of israel to donate to the poor on that day enough or nearly so for all their wants but said he the elders neglect these meetings and as a consequence they neglect to contribute to the poor as they ought he deprecated the practice of some soine sabbath school superintendents and many of the teachers as well as the older scholars in absenting themselves from the sacrament meetings in the afternoon in this city as well as the ward meetings meeting in the country they feeling that their duty was fully done when sabbath school anjou adjourned arned he reminded the bishops that every avenue possible would shortly be opened and allurements allure ments on every hand would present themselves especially ta to the youth to indulge in sabbath breaking and now was w us an opportune time to use a proper influence to prevent such desecration the necess necessity hy of ordaining the young to some of the offices in the lesser priesthood he strongly urged in order that they might prove themselves worthy of the higher priesthood when they arrived at an age to warrant their ordination thereto he remarked that many a young man among us bad been ordained to the higher priesthood when he was totally unprepared to assume the duties of the office he reminded the brethren of the counsel given of late by president george Q cannon in regard to not allowing funeral meetings to interfere with our sabbath schools and also the counsel given by our late president johnjay john taylor lor anti and by president A M cannon to not allow them to interfere with our sacrament meetings this counsel was not observed as strictly as it should be he stated that there were twelve high counselors in this stake of zion and six alternates forty four bishops and eighty eight counselors making a total of one hundred and fifty men who were actively engaged in the priesthood besides a large number of others who were members of the high priests quorum of this stake and yet how bow few were in attendance at the regular quorum meeting which convened only once a month adjourned until the first saturday in july on account of the young men mens Is conference which will be held the first saturday and sunday in june |
