Show THROUGH ARIZONA about fifty miles from florence on the banks of the san pedro river biver is situ situated aged the little town of Dudle dudleyville containing about twenty five families whose dwellings are scattered through the valley for about ten miles the people are engaged principally in farming and stock raising on the way we noticed a great variety of cactus including the sajuara Sa juara hoya choya Oja till ickley brickley Pr pear now in full bloom etc the varied hues bues and forms were a pleasant relief to the landscape A drive of twenty five miles louth enabled us to reach mammoth a bustling mining camp with a promising future before it extensive improvements are being introduced ancl and additional machinery put up we crossed the river biver but no ne water was visible it being apparently the dry bed of a river A peculiar feature of some of the arizona rivers may be noted here they cut an underground channel run under the ground for miles and again come to the surface this it the case with the river biver leaving mammoth we commence our journey of seventy miles to globe city and soon begin to climb the mountains the pins final mountain towering high in the distance is pointed out as the summit which must be crossed before we reach our destination the rough rugged road up the canyons makes the journey quite wearisome but the monotony is jellesed lell jell eved somewhat by the killing of rattlesnakes conversing with prospectors some at work on the hillsides hill sides others with guns UDIS on shoulders journeying and driving their burros or donkeys with their packs in search of new finds A few days ago a gila monster leisurely crossed the road ahead of us and cf course we captured him believing that he would be an acceptable cep cRep table addition to dr balmages Tal mages zoological collection since the capture many stories have been told of his character hut but he be is a pretty fellow notwithstanding this we are willing to believe that he must be handled with care we passed the old pioneer ff now a de sorted camp the ddll having evidently been dest r A by fire fim the town to is now in ruins but was beau situated in the ohe mountains near a stream of clear spring water we continue the ascent alonga along a narrow dugway extending about five miles till we reach the summit beav heavy timber grows on the mountain slopes including the sycamore walnut cottonwood pines etc and to us the cedar never looked more beautiful reminding the traveler of his mountain home in utah globe city is peculiarly situated the streets are very narro wiand run over low hills the ciuni county is very uneven this is the county seat of oita county being noted for its business activity and the valuable mines in the vicinity we were informed that over three hundred teams are regularly employed on the road hauling bullion to wilcox and merchandise and supplies from there many mexicans are driving teams having from fourteen to eighteen mules in a team it is stated that twenty eight thousand pounds of bullion are turned out by the mills daily after leang leaving globe we entered the indian reservation er where the apaches are located the indians indiana and aid squaws squads were traveling in all directions toward the san carlos agency where colored troops are quartered and the government buildings situated san carlos is at the junction of the san carlos and gila rivers being ration day the apaches had gathered in frons from all parts a As of the reservation to obtain thear their supplies the squads squaws stand in file around the comma building and are passed in order we were much interested in watching the squaws squads as they received their weekly rations consisting of flour beef etc they then mount their horses and ride off to their respective homes the apaches are well known as a troublesome tribe notwithstanding their bid bd record however we cannot but admire their noble dignified bearing they are a an n intelligent looking race and as we passed them on the road they greeted us with a smile or saluted us cheerful cheerfully with Hel hello lol how an do etc on the hill tops are deserted huts buts some surrounded by stone walls suggestive of having been used in times of war may the day soon come when the spirit of god will be the only agent necessary to subdue their warlike and revengeful spirit PHOENIX PHENIX CP CAMP THOMAS military reservation arizona april 1890 |
