Wurt hington of big cottonwood the immigrants set sail from liverpool on the of april at 10 a in m in the steamship wisconsin oft e guion line reaching leaching queens town tow n about 10 next morning dg thre a stay was made for about two hours the ship encountered heavy headwinds head winds throughout nearly the entire voyage and sickness was wab very prevalent among the passengers there were on only I 1 y two days of really fi fine de weather bouc out of the twelve occupied in the journey the continued rough was seas having greatly retarded the ships progress pro greA A week or so after leaving england four immense icebergs were seen floating three or four miles distant one of these is described by elder worthington worth ington as having been quite a mile and a half in length and stood at least twenty feet out of the water the others also had the appearance of small mountains the day was very squally equally but the icebergs were we re distinctly visible I 1 I 1 the ki tf of ca captain tain worrall and the officers of ta the wisconsin toward the immigrants to is highly spoken of they did everything within their power to add to the comfort and contentment of the passengers generally upon the landing of the saints in new york on thursday the alt at 2 pm they were met by mr gibson agent of the gulon guion line and mr Teu broke agent of the union pacific railroad by both of whom the utmost courtesy and consideration were shown the customary scene of bustle and excitement ensued during the examination of the baggage by the custom house officials but this portion of the pro gramme was run through in tolerable tole v good time and after an interval of about five hours the immigrants took the boat at the old dominion pier for norfolk the journey to t which place occupied something like twenty four hours the rhe baggage having been transferred to the railroad depot the company were soon again traveling the route being by way of memphis arkansas denver and cheyenne over the union pacific railroad and re as previously stated salt lal balze e city was reached at 2 pra pm on wednesday all well the trip tri p by rail was an agreeable if somewhat tiring one and the immigrants met with excellent treatment at the hands of the railroad officials the company included niue nine returning missionaries RETURNED NARIM elder orson H worth big cottonwood cotton wood returned tin n wednesday afternoon with the company of immigrants from his bis mission to england he left home on april 1888 and upon his arr arrival ivalin in liverpool was appointed to labor in the nottingham conference the president of which was elder george G hales he took up his re iodence in the leicester district and there remained for about eleven months next be labored in the hucknall district and was there engaged for some six months upon his release elder worthington w to is chosen to preside over the newcastle conference entered upon his duties there on the of october 1889 and continued until april 1890 setting sail for utah on the following day elder Worl hington states that be has benj enjoyed fits mission exceedingly and has gained considerable knowledge and experience he met with much kindness both from saints and strangers among whom he be went and I 1 in n some quarters fo found u nd many anxious to investigate the truths of the gospel dospel the meetings generally were well attended and he encountered no opposition worthy of ef mention the meetings in Rutland shire and in the hucknall district were especially successful cess ful elder worthington returns to utah in the best of health and spirits elder edward A cottrell of farmington Farming tun davis da vis county another returned missionary started for england on april ath 1888 reaching liverpool on the of the same month he was forthwith deputed to labor in the london conference under the presidency of elder henry ballard and during the first year was engaged in preaching the gospel in the district upwards of sixty outdoor meetings were held in the course of the summer months most of these were numerously attended and some successful results followed forthe for the next six months elder cottrell pursued his bis labors in the berks berke and wilts districts and occupied himself largely in FA a house to house distribution of tracts having been subsequently chosen to preside over tile the sheffield conference lie he took up his resilience residence in sheffield for a period of six months and there his eff efforts orts were rewarded with a fair measure of success he received his release on march ath 1890 and spent the remainder of his time in england gland in the county of suffolk looking up the genealogy of his relatives and friends elder J H ward was also one of f the returning missionaries he I 1 left eft utah april 16 1888 and was assigned to the swiss and german mission he labored in southern germany and switzerland where he found quite a number who were willing to listen to the gospel the people generally treated him with kindness the climate however had an in aurous effect on his health and in september 1889 he was transferred to england spending the remainder of his mission principally in the birmingham conference from which he was released to come home |
