Show sent to jail it will be remembered by the readers of the journal that during the very severe weather we had I 1 in n january ri nuary a girl named sally hodgeson 0 d was through the ill treatment af of her parents so badly frozen that amputation of portions of her feet and hands hand became necessary this case has been corn com upon more or less from the time of its occurrence until the pres ent and without an exception the course of this unfortunate girls parents has been emphatically condemned the girl presents a sorrowful corrow tul appearance not belne being able to use either hands bands or feet she is now where sh is receiving the best of treatment and d does 0 is not desire to return to her home thinking that justice should be meted acted out to those who could be so cruel as to treat a child in the manner this one was treated a complaint was sworn out against jas and mary hodgeson Hodge soo charging them with wilful neglect of their daughter sally in not providing necessary clothing or shelter for her on oa the night that she was frozen the investigation took place yesterday before commissioner goodwin bishop lewis mrs peterson the lady with whom sally is now stopping stepping N P nielsen and elmr a mr marshall save gave testimony in behalf of the prosecution mary hodgeson the girls stepmother testified to the effect that she had bad not mistreated sally but the testimony of the prosecution was conclusive to the contrary sallie testified in IB her behalf she stated that thai she slept in the loft on oa the night referred to te and that sha had bad but one good quilt and aad one poor one with which to cover her that she slept with her shoes and clothing on lor for the purpose of keeping as warm as possible that the old folks would not allow her to te sleep in any other part of the house bouse that she did not wish to go horse home again because of 0 ill treatment received there no attorney was hired for the defense but mr A B taylor who was present pres eat through charity for the old people made a plea in their behalf after which the commissioner summed up the evidence in the case and sentenced them to two mouths months each in the county jail this is a light punishment for so grave an of fence but taking into consideration their age the coin commissioner missioner thought this would answer the ends of Jup justice tice logan journal march 7 |
