Show COAL WILL SOT NOT GO UP THIS tais morning J V parker esq division freight and passenger agent of 0 the union pacific and C CE E esq eeli general agent of the coal department of the union pacific called at this office and stated that the article in yesterdays yesterday lq NEWS in reference to the price ot of epal did injustice to them personally and to the union pacific company they claimed tuat that the statement contained in that article to the effect that an official of the union pacific coal department lately remarked remar keo that ebal coal would be put up to 10 per ton should an opportunity to do so occur at the same time predicting that it would sell tor for that figure bhore becore christmas was untrue both gentlemen insisted that neither such a remark nor such IS a prediction had lieen been uttered by any person connected with either the tragic traffic or coal departments of the union pacific in this city as each bad particularly ticul arly questioned the individuals connected with his bis department the result being a denial on the part of 0 every employed emp loye of having used such expressions investigation has devel aped the fact that the language attributed to a representative of the union pacific coal department was in reality used by a dealer handling its coal our inform informant aut who heard what was said inquired who the speaker was and was answered I 1 the V U P coal man the answer was true in the sense that the speaker was an agent handling dandling U aj P coal budnot but not true in the sense that he was officially connected with the coal department 0 of f that road both of the gentlemen named scouted tile the idea that an increase in the price of coal was in contemplation by the union pacific and mr parker was particularly emphatic in giving assurance that n no increase would be made b by the conj I 1 any either in ia the price of coal or r ates tes of transi transports artil donol diat commodity the gentle mans may maj be taken as reassuring to the public who have been led to co tear fear that coal was to be made more expensive mr parker further farther explained that in case ol of a scarcity dealers having a stock on hand band might pe perhaps deraps raps raise the price but that the union pacific must not ba be held responsible f for or such action in conclusion the present aal tation of the abe coal question has bas elicited an em and authoritative correction on donahe the pariot the U union non I 1 pacific of rumors a combined movement was wa soon to be made to advance the price of coal here the union pacific will not be a factor in such a movement |
