Thirty-four-year-o- There are not many college students around, and even fewer that run marathons. John Pragle of Enoch is one of those few. Pragle was a member of the SUSC cross country team this fall, and has run numerous marathons in Utah and all over the world. Pragles road to southern Utah is almost as long as some of his races. He was raised in Groveland, N.Y., and ran the race in high school track. After high school, Pragle went to work for the Eastman two-mi- le Kodak Company, and later attended junior college for a year. After a move to Jeneseo, N.Y., Pragle met and married his wife, Sharon, and became a postman. He later moved to Virginia, where he worked in several capacities, including car salesman. Following his discharge from the service, Pragle and his wife both attended Central Texas College and graduated with two-yeassociate degrees. While in Texas, Pragle said he read about southern Utah and was impressed with the small-town atmosphere Cedar City had to offer. I like the mountains, the small towns and the educational opportunities, Pragle said, so we decided to pack up and as distance runners. ohn Pr.ie'i gained his experience iimni u. for Army teams and u.is ol the militarys top runners Ju mu his stint in the Army. When was in Germane, really ran a lot, and enjou.l it, Pragle said. He ran in ra.es all over Europe and has all over the United States to compete. As his final years of school wind down, Pragle said he would some day like to be either a sales representative for Nike athletic shoes or have his own specialized business in running equipment. 1 come here. When he arrived in Utah, Pragle worked as a warehouse manager for a mining corporation at Beryl Junction. Soon after, though, both Pragle and his wife enrolled at SUSC. Sharon Pragle graduated a year ago and now teaches at Enoch Elementary School. Both Pragles participated in the Thunderbird track program Lady Birds lose at ISU; open stand Thursday After a slow start, the Southern Utah State Lady 'Birds spent the evening chasing the ball and fighting to come from behind before bowing out to the Idaho State Bengal womens basketball squad, in Pocatello Monday night. They were an extremely physical team and that caught us off guard in the beginning, said SUSC guard Mary Cox. Were not used to getting pushed around like that in the middle. They threw a lot of elbows, and it took a little while to recover. Though Idaho State is an NCAA Division I school, while the Thunderbirds play in the NAIA District VII, Cox said she and her teammates were not really impressed with the 81-6- Bengals. They werent overly awesome or anything, she said. Its always tough to open on the road, especially in a place like the Minidome. By the time we recovered, we had to play catchup the whole night. If we had played them with some game experience, I think we could have beat them, Cox added. The Lady 'Birds were led in the scoring department by senior guard Gwen Thomas, who pumped in 19 points zone press. against a tough Gwen played very well, Cox commented. They stopped up the middle to keep us from going to our taller people, and Gwen just blistered them from the outside. Though she did not start, the Thunderbirds received a surprising standout performance from freshman Amy Wright. Wright, a 9 forward from Provo, was the only other SUSC player to score in double figures, putting in 10 points, while yanking down five rebounds. Amy did a good job in coming off the bench, Cox said. She was a good high school player, and shes played in big game situations, so she didnt get rattled... she played a good game. The Lady Birds are scheduled to return home after the opening season loss to prepare for conference competition this weekend. SUSC will host Western New Mexico Thursday night in War Memorial Fieldhouse. The Lady Birds will then take Friday off before coming back to meet New Mexico Highlands Saturday night. Both games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
