SUSC, now 3 officially with one win in an exhibition game, will return home today to tune up for a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game against New Mexico Highlands Monday night in War Memorial Fieldhouse. Turnovers hurt the Thunderbirds in the early going, as SUSC gave the ball up in its first four trips down the floor. The Bengals took advantage of SUSCs miscues to build a 14-- 4 lead three minutes into the game. We made some mistakes early in the game that really hurt us, Thunderbird Coach Bob Schermerhorn said. By the time we got over those errors, we were behind and couldnt come back. SUSC did fight valiantly, however, Schermerhorn said. I was proud of the way our players worked hard and gave a good effort, the mentor said. They never gave up. Idaho State had to work to maintain their lead. Defense was one of SUSCs stronger points on the night. Though the Bengals scored 99 points, Schermerhorn said his squad played the defensive end of the floor well. We kept them away from the hoop as well as 99-7- 8 0-- Scott Pace (10) lofts a layup over the outstretched hand of a Brazilian player in SUSCs 99-8victory last week. 9 could be expected, Schermerhorn said. They got a lot of their inside points on conversions off the offensive boards. lead eight After the Bengals pulled out to a minutes into the first half, SUSC battled back to pull within 10 points on several occasions. The Thunderbirds played most of the first half without starting center John Pierce, who was nursing a sore ankle. Pierce did make his presence known in the second half when he came off the Thunderbird bench to grab several rebounds. After committing four quick personal fouls, however, Pierce was forced to spend the rest of the game on the pine. I didnt think it was wise to play John any more than we did, Schermerhorn said. We were behind, and he was hurt as it was, so I didnt think we should take any chances of getting him hurt any more than he was. Though ISU dominated the Thunderbirds throughout the balance of the game, SUSC made a good showing, Schermerhorn said. We played well, both offensively and defensively, he said. We shot well, and made some good steals. They beat us on the boards, but thats nothing we didnt expect... they were so much taller than we 33-1- 5 were. SUSC hit 36 of 69 shots from the field for a blistering 52 percent. Eddie Benson led all scorers with 25 points, while Daniels added 22 points and four steals. Jeffs had 14 points and six rebounds. Daniels 37 tops Brazil Led by junior guard Charles Carradine, the Weber State Wildcats ran off a string of eight unanswered points near the close of the first half and kept the pressure on in the second stanza to defeat the Southern Utah State Thunderbirds, in basketball action in Ogden Saturday. Behind the scoring punch of Shawn Daniels, the Thunderbirds made the game interesting for the first 15 minutes. Daniels hit four field goals in a three minute stretch that kept SUSC within striking distance much of the way. Meanwhile, Scott Pace controlled the boards for the smaller SUSC squad, as the grabbed as many rebounds as Weber. However, SUSC faced its greatest difficulty when it was forced to play without the services of junior center John Pierce, who was whistled for three fouls in the early going. Weber pivotman Though Shawn Campbell was also on the bench with three fouls, the Wildcats appeared to have tall 97-6- 0 players'to spare. SUSC, playing against a decided height advantage, fought gamely under the boards but took poor shots from the field. defense Only a and Daniels blistering outside close shooting kept the in the first half. When Daniels sat down three minutes before the close of the first half, Webers retaliation against the SUSC zone was suddenly effective, and the Wildcats ran up a 15 point halftime lead. After building a substantial lead midway through the second period, Weber State coasted to victory. Daniels led all Thunderbirds scorers with 16 points, while Pace ended up with 11 rebounds. Daniels 37 points offset the hot shooting of former NBA standout Raymond Townsend as SUSC defeated the Sao Paulo, Brazils, Sirio Sports in an exhibition Club, game last Tuesday night. Daniels was aided by Todd Jeffs, who pumped in 24 points. 99-8- (left) and assistant coach Bill Evans give last minute instructions to Eddie Benson (20) during the exhibition win over the Brazilian National Team.
