Show The Thunderbird Monday, November 14, 1983 "Custom Mason no typical fullback by Scott Ball Gary Mason is not the typical college fullback. At and 182 pounds, Mason, a senior from Salt Lake City, is smaller than most fullbacks. However, what Mason lacks in size he makes up in dedication and desire, said Thunderbird offensive coordinator Larry Wilson. Mason graduated from Salt Like City's Judge High School in 1980. While at Judge he was named to various teams and was heavily recruited by major colleges before he finally decided to come to SUSC. After joining the Thunderbirds, Mason immediately became the starting fullback. As a sophomore, he broke the SUSC school record for the longest gain from scrimmage when he scored on an run against Western State. Following that same sophomore season, the University of Utah made a lucrative scholarship offer for Masons services, but the fullback opted to stay at SUSC. In his four years at SUSC, Mason has given only his best effort to the Thunderbirds. Last season, for example, Mason played the last four games of the season with a broken wrist. Mason is studying sports medicine and athletic training. SUSC offers only a minor in those fields, and after finishing his studies here, Mason said he plans to pursue sports medicine at the University of Utah. In order to better prepare himself for the athletic training field, Mason works w.th Thunderbird trainer Ben Built Goodncu Coupon PIZZA SALAD BAR SANDWICHES SPAGHETTI pOR CefcaR Davidson. He said he hopes to serve as a trainer at the Olympics someday. Athletic training is not the only field he would like to pursue, however. Mason said he would also like to try his hand at football in the United States Football League. While growing up in Salt Lake City, Mason became acquainted with Adrian and Aaron Sampson, long jump stars for the Thunderbird track squad. Though the Sampson twins are from California, their father lives in Salt Lake City, and is a friend of Masons father. I knew Adrian and Aaron through their dad, and we kind of grew up together, Mason said. The twins acknowledge that Mason helped recruit them to SUSC. Though he has been successful in his athletic career, Mason is careful not to boast about his abilities. I owe it all to my mom, my dad and, he added, the man upstairs.
