Women's athlete of the week by Brooks Washburn 16-- 9 Its been said that man who is a jack of all is usually good at everything but perfect in a trades nothing. In the case of Boyd Adams, however, the old saying contains perhaps a kernal of truth, but Adams continues striving for perfection in all he does. Adams, SUSC womens basketball coach, has coached everything in Thunderbird sports from football to track. 1 enjoy the coaching profession, Adams said. There are not many things I can think of that would allow a man to enjoy his work so much. Born and raised in Cedar City, Adams participated in varsity sports at Cedar High honors in School, and achieved basketball. While attending Cedar High, he met his wife, Jaine. They were married just before he entered the service. Our wedding took place on Christmas Eve of 1950 just before 1 went into the Korean War, Adams said. While in the Air Force, Adams played basketball and baseball for the servicemens teams. He was Force squad in basketball. selected to the All-AAfter finishing his tour of duty, Adams returned to Cedar City to play basketball and baseball for SUSC, then known as Branch Agricultural College. As a basketball player for BAC, Adams once again earned honors as an outstanding player. Not only did the BAC take sixth in the National Junior College Tournament, but Adams was also and named to both the teams for that year. Following his successful efforts at BAC, Adams transferred to Utah State University to become a member of the basketball team. During the time he played for the Aggies, Adams did not win any individual honors, but he prepared himself for future coaching jobs. After graduating from Utah State, Adams was hired at Kanab High School, where he coached all types of sports. After a three year stay in Kanab, he transferred back to SUSC, this time as an interim coach in All-Sta- Mary (Sharp) Cox, a senior guard from Weiser, Idaho, has played particularly well in preliminary basketball workouts and provides floor leadership for the Lady Bird hoopsters. Adams led the finish that year. Thunderbirds to a Following his successful debut, Adams transferred to Brigham Young University to complete his masters degree. Upon finishing that work, Adams took a job at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas as an assistant basketball coach. He stayed there two years before returning to SUSC. From 1962 to 1971, Adams guided the Thunderbird basketball team and also served as head track coach and assistant football coach. SUSC has been a lifetime thing with me... I love the people and the campus... Adams continued coaching until 1971. At that time, he said he felt the need for a change, and he decided to open up a sporting goods store. After two years in the retail business, Adams said he decided to return to school, and he went to earn his doctorate at the University of Utah. Adams returned to Southern Utah, this time in the capacity of a Human Services governmental employee. Finally, in 1978, Adams returned to SUSC as assistant football coach and head track coach. Adams worked in the two programs before taking his current job as head of the womens basketball team. Adams said he really enjoys the womens basketball program because of the good attitude of the girls. As father to three daughters, Adams also admitted a special prejudice toward girls. I really feel that SUSC has been a lifetime thing with me, Adams said. I love the people and the campus, and that is what has always brought me back again.
