Show Page 4 The Thunderbird Monday, November 14, 1983 A womans worth is still judged by looks Exploitation of a womans physical appeal has its foundations deep in history, and even today it is propagated by public institutions, including SUSC. The Miss SUSC Homecoming Queen Pageant continues to favor the chauvinistic attitude that a womans sexual attractiveness is what gives her ultimate value. However, as any pageant supporter will quickly point beside physical fitness other there are categories out, such as talent and interviews judges take carefully into consideration. And the pageant does begin with an opening prayer. What could be a more wholesome and innocent event? Although thinly guised, the SUSC Queen Pageant uses the same foundation that Hustler and Penthouse make their profits from. Here again, the point will immediately be raised that women serve as judges they even outnumber the men just so sexual bias will not have influence in the judging. If this is true, let it be proven by redesigning the means by which judgments are determined. This could be done in a way to make the contest what it ostensibly is. One idea would be to have contestants reveal themselves for who they really are, not what they look to be, through written compositions or taped interviews on different subjects. As each contestant entered the room where compositions would be written or interviews recorded, instead of signing her name, a number could be used for identification, insuring unbiased consideration by the judges. Although there are means whereby a more just contest could be held, it is doubtful efforts will be made to have such a change come to pass, as the real objectives of the pageant will not change as long as people continue to judge others on surface values, namely physical appearance. Nowadays it is the vogue to have men compete in similar competitions; certainly this proves the Queens Pageant is fair. After all, theres one for the men too. Do the men model before judges in their swimming trunks as the women do in their swimming suits? Pepetuation of the Beauty Queen Syndrome continues: You are only as good as you look.
