The Bicentennial is the 200th birthday of the oldest and greatest democracy in history. Congress established Hie American Revolution Bicentennial Administration and this administration has a congressional mandate to coordinate and provide assistance for local, state, national and international activities that commemorate the nation's lounding. The administration has de-med its primary goal to be "a new Spirit ol '70 a commitment which will unite the nation in purpose and dedication to the adv ancement ot human well are as it moves into the third century The Bicentennial Administration has 1 recommended that the com- memorating of our nation's birthday be national in scope, seeking to involve every state, city and community; that the Bicentennial be a local point for a review and realfirmation of the principles on which the nation was lounded and lor a new understanding ot our heritage, and that it be the occasion lor looking ahead, lor dedicating ourselves to our common purposes and for speeding the accomplishment ol specilic local projects responsive to national priorities. Legislature Provides The binding ol the I'tah Bicentennial activities was provided by the I tali State Legislature, 1973 session. A total ol $8 million was appropriated to be distributed among the counties on the lollowing basis: $6.5 million to Salt Lake County to be used as matching lunds for the Center for the Performing Arts; the remaining $1 5 million to be distributed among the rest ol the counties on a basis ol approximately 83 per capita to be spent on projects throughout the county which were approved with matching funds. The funding for Salt Lake County was earmarked and totally committed by the legislature for the Performing Arts Center. This left the Salt Lake County Bicentennial Committee with no lunds to carry out any Bicentennial projects in the county Legislation was passed in the 1975 session of the Legislature to allow the State Bicentennial Commis sion authority to allocate a portion ol the interest money that had accrued on the 86 7 million tor the Pertorming Arts Center ilor which matching lunds Irom the city and county have not yet been made available! to be appropriated by the state commission. Selects 3 Themes The isait Lake County Bicentennial Committee comprises an executive committee ol a chairman. Mr William B Martin; vice chairman, Mrs. Peggy Hansen, secretary, Mrs. Joanne Bunte; treasurer. Mrs Dee Vincent Three themes were selected by the Bicentennial Administration to provide a lramcwork tor Bicentennial activities which are described as "Heritage, Festival and Horizons " The executive committee of the Salt Lake Bicentennial Committee also includes the heritage chairman, Mrs Barbara Dewsnup, the horizons chairman, Mrs. Faye Lundcpiist; and the testiva1 committee has several chairman under the leadership ol coordinator Mrs. Louise Judd. In addition to these people, the executive committee has a church coordinator. Mrs Gerry llaimi: a publicity chairman, Mrs. Julie Allen, an education chairman. Mr. Ronald Hciruansen. a tinance chairman. Mr Spencer Osborn; legal counsel is J C. Williams: a representative from Salt Lake County, Commissioner William E. Dunn: and a representative from Salt Lake City, Olol Zundel. The horizons committee comprises some 20 members. the heritage committee comprises nine members; while the festival committee presently comprises 12 members Each of the other committees has three to six members. Appropriates $230,000 Upon request ol the Salt Lake Comity Bicentennial Committee the state commission appropriated $250,000 ol the interest money to be used for Bicentennial projects throughout the county. This amounted to approximately 00 c cuts per capita for Salt Lake Comity. At a steermg committee meeting in September the following projects ol the 64 218.0458 Modular Stereo Tracy-Collln- 1 heritage and horizons committees were approved with matching funding from the list of applications that had been submitted: Heritage Committee: 1. Fort Union cemetery restoration. 2. Midvale, cabin restoration. 3. "Sheep to Shawl permanent demonstration, weaving Pioneer Trail Slate Park. L Wheeler Living Historical Farm Restoration 5. Murray City Park amphitheatre restoration. 6. Brockbank Bicentennial Park lime kiln restoration. 7. The Jew in America exhibit. Horizons Committee: Memory Grove improvement and perception garden for the blind and handicapped. 2. Sandy Bicentennial pavilion. 3. Hansen Planetarium telescopic observatory. 1. Second East Street will be closed between 4th and 5th South to accommodate folklore and square dancers. This festive fair will be prefaced by a Bicentennial Parade in downtown Salt Lake City, concluding at historic ashington Square An Eventide Service will be presented at the University of Ulan Special Events Center on Sunday evenmg, July 1976. 4 This program will include musical numbers from various religious groups in the county. The speaker tor the occasion will be Norman Vincent Peale and the guest soloist will be Tennessee Ernie Ford. The Evntide Service is chaired by the church committee Many and varied activities have been planned and are being carried out by the school children in the four school districts in the county. The publicity committee, working closely with each committee, will keep Salt Lake County residents informed of all details of Salt Lake County Bicentennial events Businesses, individuals, lamihes, ilubs, groups and organizations throughout the county have the opportunity to be a part of the bicentennial year and to be a part of a permanent record as a contributor by making a linaiicial contribution which will be used to fund approved projects to expand county Bicentennial aceomp lishments.
