hinkie bryan was born at bryan farm floyds fork lcy ky dec 1807 died at his residence in nephi juab county utah territory january 1885 1883 aged 77 67 years and 1 month ile he was baptized by andrew love and confirmed by president brigham youn young a member of the church of jesus jesu christ of latter day saints at mosquito creek greek iowa lowa on the day of july 1846 WHAT LED TO ius JUS conversion in the summer of I 1 1833 he lie was out hunting huntin in the woods of little okae Moul moui moultrie tiie tile county illinois and while in the pursuit of game was attracted b by y the sound of a aoud loud voice speaking in a emphatic tones and being curious to know the cause leaned his gun against a tree and noiselessly approached the speaker when he drew near enough for tor observation lie he found that the speaker was a man poorly clad being barefooted and standing upon a log preaching to a small company of peo uie gle pie encamped at that spot ile he sat down wn upon a fallen tree and unobserved listened to the speaker who was teaching his companions in the duties of their several callings and though the birst first principles ot the gospel were not mentioned by the speaker brother bryan there and then became convinced that the little company of travelers were the true followers of the lord jesus christ and that the speaker was uttering inspired words ile he learned that the travelers were a company of latter day saints and though he did not join the church immella immediately tely from that time he advocated and sustained the principles of mormonism and for that cause was driven from his possessions at little okae moultrie county ill lil dillwith with the latter day saints in the early spring of 1846 when he started west reaching highland grove iowa in july of the same year the mob drove from love and family wm win cazier and family and george best and family mormons cormons Mor mons and brother bryan and family who had not then joined the church the mob offered to give brother bryan further time to make preparations for moving saying they had nothing against him except that he would harbor the mormons cormons Mor mons but he refused the proposal and moved at once with the company lie he built a house and remained at highland grove until the day of may 1848 1818 when he started west REACHING SALT LAKE LIKE VALLEY on the day of september of the same year where he took up a cit city lot and farm and remained until the day of october 1851 1831 when he oved moved to nephi juab co utah reaching that place on the first of Nov november eraGer I 1 in november 1852 he was ordained a high priest by bishop jacob G bigler sen and chosen and set apart to act as his first counselor in which position lie he acted until june 1861 when he was ordained and set apart by bishop edward hunter to act as bishop of juab county counte and he acted in that capacity until october 1869 when ne ile went on a mission to the western and middle states returning from his mission on the loth loa day of larch alarca 1870 he took a prominent part in the INDIAN WAR of 1853 and was one of the committee appointed and who acted in the location and of the fort wall around the town of oaf nephi the dimensions oj the wall bein being rods square 6 feet thick bilick at the bottom and two f feet beet at the top and 12 19 feet high having gates on the north and south sides ile he held a commission from governor brigham young appointing him to the office of surgeons mate of the battalion of infantry of juab military district with the rank of second lieutenant of juab military district of the nauvoo Leg lex legion lorand and of the militia of utah territory to take rank from the day of january 1854 june 1877 he was ordained and set apart by president bri brigham youn young to the office of a member of the higl higi council of the juab stake of zion which office he be held until his death ile he took toole a leading part in the building of the nephi ante hi meetinghouse meeting house and social clarl hall and in tile the locating of the and fields of juab county also in the establishment of operative cooperative co institutions and he presided over the nephi cooperative co operative aier Alei mercantile cantile and manufacturing and the nephi mill and manufacturing companies for hevral years he organized the nephi relief society june lie he held the office of a selectman in juab county court from 1854 1851 to 1861 he entertained president brigham young with many of his company on nearly every occasion of his passing through nephi no phi and kept an open free house to the traveling public for many years lie he acted as physician and surgeon free of charge on every occasion to any and all who called
