The whole world can blow up and we continue down our narrow little road. It had begun with the discovery that her husband had neglected to file their income tax return several years before. After that he deliberately did not file for the succeeding nine years. Her first clue apparently she didnt notice there were no yearly forms requiring her came when the signature Internal Revenue Service moved in. Our heroine had known of this situation for a little over a '"tar when she called me to help with her household budget. What had she done? Absolutely nothing. She had not made one move toward getting a job. Family Founders I dont bring this case up so that we may all duck over a her possible greed (or his criminal responsibility). I have long since given up making this kind of judgment. pos-sib- She may or may not have been gieedy. She was, however, subject to the same paralyzing Influence that can cause a family to founder financially at any income level: She was a victim of habit. She is no worse, no better than any woman or man who refuses to give up spending money that isnt there. The bills that were piling up are not less justifiable than any bad debt for the tt The only difference is her story is so out of the ordinary that we can easily see her mistake. When it's closer to home its harder to recognize. The financial habits of our ow n making are not only har der to recognize, they are apparently almost impossible to change. I have heard too often of the "unbreakable weekly hair appointment and "unchangeable domestic help costs. I have talked to too many family members who have firmly refused to give up anything during times of financial stress. At the time of this particular phone call the tax matter J mentioned was pending before the IRS. i know no further details because I did not discuss it beyond the one com I suggested at that time that she get the house on the market, sell the extra cars and get a job. Then I lapsed into the vernacular and said, Come back vhen this is done, tell me your total uncommitted income and Ill teach you how to live poor. There was a long silence at the other end of the line. I haven't heard from her since. obvious thing for summer and very snort i'nuiti at limt. At Louis Feraud, who showed his spring collection last week, shorts are sporty by day, suggestive at night. Worn with boots or bright clunky clogs, they come in leather with a short battle jacket. In red, navy and black jersey, shorts peep through the side slits of his tank top dresses. Matching blouses and jackets are short, too. Many Colors Feraud, who never finds any print too garish, does a group of navy, cocoa, red and black splashes on canvas. I was on my way grocery shopping and I was all by the chilmyself dren were home with colds and faand it must ther have been that heady sensation of being by myself that made me act so y. 4 ' rashly. Shed of my 1 I young, I left respon sibility behind, too. I decided to stop by just for a minute and look at some clothes on sale. I wasnt going to buy anything; just dream a little and leave. The store was jammed with other irresponsible women and most of them seemed to wear my size. It made me so mad. Id reach out my hnd for a dress and someone else would snatch it and the minute they held it up Id realize that that was just the dress I wanted. After a few times I started getting a little rude and snatching dresses as fast as I could before someone else f got them, and by and by my fingers were rigid from holding so many hangers. There was a long wait to get into the dressing room, and while I was wafting I picked out a perfectly beautiful suit on sale for half price. As it turned out, the suit was a little small, but there was this loudmouth in the stall next to mine who poked her head inside my stall and said, "Say, if that suit doesnt fib you, let me try it on. Since Id been thinking while we were standing in line that she had a broad stern I wasnt about to let the suit fit her if it wouldnt fit me, so what could I do? The whole thing happened so fast and everyone was rushing around and there was this feeling of mob excitement. and Im a fool, Ive always known that. Before I knew it I was at the counter with my selections heaped high and the salesgirl ringing up sale after sale. Since every item was marked down so far I just knew the total would be small. It wasnt. It was $76.83. I gulped and gasped but the salesgirl was putting everything into a huge sack and others were waiting impatiently to bs waited on and nobody seemed to care that Id just spent three years clothing allowance in half an hour. All the while I was grocery shopping ("Shut up and eat your canned beans, children Mama didnt want to cook and ruin her new dress.) I was rationalizing like crazy'. I tallied over and over the amount of money Id saved. I promised myself Id not buy clothes for the next two years, but it didnt work. I still felt terribly guilty when I got home. "Oh honey, Im so sorry, I said to husband. "Youre going to be so mad when you find out how much I just spent on clothes. "Nonsense, he said, patting the little woman's hand. "You know I dont mind having you buy new clothes. I dont cere if you spent . . . $76.83! j r not. Suit Printed , had a fuschia tank suit printed on the chiffon corresponding to a real suit underneath. Another was flesh color, with felt patches in the essenOne tial places. Coats are in canvas of many color and flare out very full from the waist. With them go jersey cuffed caps. And to women who insist on them, Feraud concedes a few real dresses. One was printed with different color eyeballs here and there. Another had a circle cut out between the shoulder blades, and a third was covered with sequin grasshopper heads and antennae. Remove Dark Film The dark film on aluminum pans can be removed by filling the pan with hot water and a couple of tablespoons of cream of tartar.
