Well have to win games on the road as well as at home, but we havent given up. In the hall, waiting for coach Jack Gardner to wind up his post game radio interview, the Utes had some ether ideas. Senior forward Ken Gardner had played here two years ago and been part of a licking, administered by the Arizona sophs. "It wasnt even close then, Gardner added. But somethings happened since then. I think Arizona has the best talent in the league, but it isnt playing as a team. That was our problem at Utah at the beginning of this season; every man was playing for himself. But we changed that. I guess Coach Gardner only added, our sophomores have made more prog-tes- s in three years than Arizona's did." 54-4- First Four Minutes For the first four minutes of the second half it appeared as if a lot of impostors had changed into the game suits for both sides. Both teams went scoreless for the first full two minutes of the half and then they started playing again. Ken Gardner, hitting well from the outside and getting a lot of second and third attempts, was the big gun for Utah with 31 points. Mike Newlm had 27 and Earl (Peaches) Laster 17 and that took care of the bulk of the Ute scoring. Arizona State got great balance in their scoring and actually made as many field goals as Utah, but hit only 12 out of 25 from the free throw line while Utah was canning 1? of 22. Peaches Laster, who had chipped in 28 points in his best effort of the season, had his kidding moments, especially from Ken Gardner who scored only 16 points. And Mike Newlin 'added almost seriously, My, did I shoot 13 times; I didnt realize 1 was shooting so often? Someone was quick to point out that Newlin had made 11 baskets in 13 shots and Mike said, again seriously, yes. I remember that second one I missed.
