Show MASS MEETING A mass meeting of the citizens of mill creek north jordan union and south cottonwood wards held at south cottonwood ward house jan 9 1884 T A wheeler was called caged to tile the cha chair ir and NY G young secretary the chairman stated that the object of this meeting was to take some action with regard to the great losses of life and property sustained by the people OV owing ng to the poison from the smelters shelters sm elters in the neighborhood J F esq stated that he thought we had bad some rights that should be respected and moved that the chairman appoint a co cittee of five to draw up resolutions resolution the following gentlemen were appointed viz j JI ii esq IV 11 at atwood chill miller vin wm win park and levi 11 delmn before the committee retired several statements were made which established the tile facts pretty well to tb our minds that would not cover the losses already sustained while the committee were out there ther was ewas much said which pretty well established the fact th that at the people are in earnest and at the same gamb time allfeld to respect rights while the meeting was walting waiting for tile the committee to report mr young called the attention of the meeting to the ex istance ot of a dan dau dangerous erous crossing on the county ro road ad at the lle horn silver sliver er smelter by the V U 1 it and enough was said sald sald said to establish the fact that from 50 50 t tp teama bw w ww Z kjan ejan daily af a ami ml i 1 1 that many times teams have to ava wait it a lon ion long iong time for trains to move and fand the feeling was that in justice to the public the railroad company should build a bridge over the track the committee reported the follow n ng resolutions thereasa whereas reasa a number of smelting smelling sm elting or reducing works have of late years geen been established and operated in our district of country counti jr whose poisonous f fumes umes have been the means of injuring the health of the people and destroying thousands of dollars worth of property in horses cows bees and 0 other tur ter live stock and in rendering almost useless those ft fi elds which lie adjacent to those works and whereas the land in this section of country was reclaimed from its natural sterility and by our industry converted into prosperous homes for ourselves and families many years prior to the establishment of these shelters smelters sm elters and now the permanency of gur homes the good health of our families the safety of our livestock live stock and the prosperity of our vocation cation To as farmers is seriously threatened by the continuation and probable increase of the evil work may maybe s so 0 constructed and operated as to prevent r almost entirely the escape ott oft of their el r poisonous fumes into open air a and nd that too I 1 without causing any pecuniary ax loss t to 0 their owners be e it therefore resolved by the land owners of this district of country now assembled first that the f fumes umes from said smelters shelters sm elters as now suffered to escape from the most of them into the open air is a public nus nu siance lance and as such ought to be abated Second That the governor and legislative isla tive assembly of the territory now ngi about to convene in salt lake city be pe petitioned titio ned to enact laws for the suppression of these nuisances and for the proper redress of all grievances resulting in 1111 third rd that a committee of five be appointed to wait upon the proprietors agents or superintendents of said establishments and lay before them our grievances and urge upon them the necessity of so constructing st an and operating their works as not to injure the health of our people nor destroy our property and our valuable homes and that they be authorized to call f urther further meetings of the people should they find it necessary that in case all means of persuasion fail fad to accomplish the object above S set et forth we continue by a union of 0 our means and labor to seek redress in the courts fourth that the secretary of this meeting be instructed to furnish copies of the minutes of the proceedings of this meeting to the pu ulic alic papers for publication on W G young win II 11 U and 11 II W brown brown ware were appointed a committee to draw up a petition to present presen bett to Legislature the 3 meeting ing adjourned subject to callif call cali of committee |
