Show Letters from our readers DESERET NEWS, FRIDAY, OCTOBER Town's no 'speed trap' To the editor residents of Soldier Summit, we were very surprised to find that we had made the headlines in the rnee Sun Advocate, and even more surprised to learn what little research it requires to write such an article We would like to point out a few errors in the article Ah No seedmu tickets have ever been issued anyone going under 50 to mph (not even a lawyer). 2. Never, in any 24 hour period, have more than automobiles leen stopped and the average per shift per officer is 10 tickets (one officer per day is average, sometimes two will work) 50 :t We were very happy to hear that the Sun Advocate called the judge, hut he was more surprised than anyone because he has never had a phone at Soldier Summit and it will lie several weeks before the telephone company will install one. J. Harold Call, Wasatch county attorney from lictier City, had an open invitation to give us legal advice and at no time did he put us under legal fire." In fact, he was very considerate in helping us with our ordinance 4. 5. We did not set the speed limit. The speed limit was set by the state some years ago. We had asked some time ago that tho speed through town be lowered to 35 mph and the request was denied by the Department of Transportation. We have 13 children in our town who cross the highway several times each day, and we feel our kids are just as entitled to the protection of the law and a safe speed limit as those in downtown Price. 6. The town of Soldier Summit has on order two large signs, 4x4, stating the speed limit. They will be installed within a week and will be enforced as the d ones are at present. state-supplie- 7. The traffic ordinances of Soldier Summit from the Uniform Traffic Code of the State of Utah, and states, in every event speed shall be so controlled as may tie necessary to avoid collision with any person, vehicle or other conveyance on or entering the highway in compliance with the legal requirements and the duty of all persons to use due care From the Uniform Traffic Code as adopted by Soldier Summit, All motor an addendum to that code states, vehicles shall not exceed the posted speed limit on any public highway; it is unlawful for any person to exceed 40 mph within the town limits, or 25 mph on the back streets or alley ways of Soldier Summit." It may be of interest to someone that during the last year we have had seven burglaries of homes and 21, 19 77 A4 Smokeout for a day To the editor; The Utah Division of the American Cancer Society is a jump ahead of Surgeon General Julius Richmond, who National proposes a Dont Smoke Day. (Dos. News, Oct. 17) It is asking every smoker in Utah to kick the habit for a day on Nov. 17, as part of "The Great American Smokeout. Its a national campaign by the Cancer Society to make Nov. 17 Smokeless Thursday." While the approach we are just as entitled to law and order as any other town, even if we are 97 miles from the county sheriffs office. may seem light, the motive of the Cancer Society in promoting The Great American Smokeout is a deadly serious one: To do something about the terrible toll in human lives which cigarette smoking takes every year. In America alone, cigarette smoking is an important contributing cause in a quarter of a million deaths annually. That is a waste we can ill afford. George R. Schade, Town president, and 11 others Betty Fisher Farmington businesses, we have had one business shot up by someone who knew our nearest police help was at least 30 miles away. We had one drunk make the announcement that he was going to shoot a whole family, and made it over C.B. radio, no less. We bad one of our citizens threaten to shoot a girl because she had disfigured one of his signs. We have had cars broken into, homes damaged, C.B. radios stolen, trucks stolen. There had been threats to bum down homes, and dogs shot in the city limits. We feel that PCTN CD Master costs $20 less than the regular season mfrs. 14" Toro Snow suggested retail price til Nov. 1. 'Gay' rule an insult To the editor: As an American citizen who believes in the Constitution, I feel the latest decision of the Supreme Court singling out a group, i,e homosexuals, and holding that these individuals are deviates and may be fired from their jobs for pursuing their individual human rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is a demeaning, insulting slap in the face to every American citizen. It seems to me it is not a question of whether one is straight or gay. The real issue is can constitutional rights be denied to an individual simply because his or her definition of morality differs with the average middle-clas- s norms? Human rights are the very foundation afforded to all Americans. No one, not even a Supreme Court justice, has the right to force another citizen to socialize under a standard definition of morals. Morality is an individual issue and is percieved from within ourselves. The courts have no business or right to rule against human rights. Charles H. Holmes University of Utah At press' pleasure? To the editor: I am writing in regard to an article on the first page of Section B (Metro Section), Oct. 15 weekend. The article is titled Ritter Moves to Slow Media Coverage. I believe strongly that somewhere along the line your newspaper has lost sight of one important fact: That trial is not being held to provide a convenience for your newspaper. The jury requested that such action by Judge Ritter would make it easier for them to concentrate on what the witness was saying, rather than being distracted by people entering and leaving the courtroom. The courtroom is, quite obviously, overcrowded. There are 16 defense attorneys and 22 defendants seated inside the rail in addition to the marshals, prosecutors, court clerks, recorders, and the witness. Spectators, reporters and others outside the rail can create a distraction by entering and leaving whenever they please. Your banner over the story only To the editor : Due to certain policies of the Salt Lake City Commission, it is necessary to oppose their very distorted and dictatorial decisions and speak out loudly against such policies. Your newspaper shows an obvious bias when using such headlines as is over this article. The note from the jurors should have been enough to explain why Judge Ritter ruled as he did. Perhaps, with your papers influence, you could get the court to hold night sessions that would better fit your purposes; if that doesnt work, then remind your reporters that all the testimony should be heard before they get up, leave the courtroom and call their paper. It might just be possible that in leaving the courtroom your reporters may miss more news than they actually get. How about some fair play, something new and different? Second, they keep blocking Main Street off for a couple of days for the advantage of art festivals, car dealers and downtown merchants, to the disadvantage of everyone else. Third, on a whim and with no public bearing, they decide to change the name of a street Their heads are obviously over-site- d and they are bearing out the fact that if you give a man some power then he will usurp more. Fourth, they appoint some committee to decide what to do with Brigham Youngs statue, and all their suggestions seem to be to block more streets, with no mention of a public hearing or citizen imput.
