The men in the neighborly, nd. who had steered clear pl;f the skunK, were a iutio urprised when SifKarcn Saylor arrived to olve the problem. And she surprised them even more when she said she ,ss going to capture the ,kunk and let it go again in the mountains. Karen is Bountifuls newest animal control officer. She says her soft heart and a 3 soft touch have kept her jjtrom using the harsh prac-I- f tires sometimes associated with the dog catcher. Shes also an ordinance officer, enforcing the citys ' H jj on laws fences, signs, junk cars and noise patrols the city on animal control. The skunk incident didnt end up too rosy, however. She and one of the men in the neighborhood covered the trap w ith a plastic sack and she drove to a nearby canyon to let the animal out and 1 avoid having to kill it. Unfamiliar with the cat trap, the skunk got out before she expected and let loose with a foliage, as she spray. "It missed hitting me directly," she said, but the smell stuck in her house, clothes and truck for several day s. Davis Karen was a crew leader of seven persons on the citys flood control projct before the job of ordinance officer opened up. At first I turned them down, she said, but after ridmg around the city with the city outer aiuinai control officer, she began to take a liking to the job Skunks arent the only non-do- g shes had to deal w ith. Sheep grazing near a reservoir were attacked by a dog and she had to put them to sleep. In another instance, she and other officers tried to use lassos to catch horses loose in the middle of town. Shes also assigned to control rats. Karen says she doesnt like to take a dog to the pound unless necessary and often takes the animals to their home if she can. If the dog is running loose, the owner gets a ticket, but also gets his dog back. Karen likes to think her job is helping animals, not trying to catch someone doing something jvrong. "I love animals so much, it hurts to see animals mistreated," she said. She recalled an incident when she w as called out at 3 a m. to pick up a dog that had been hit by a car. She said people often let their dogs out at night when patrol units arent on. She received city reengni- - FARMINGTON Davis County youths uho won honors with their projects in the recent.
