Flip a coin or take your choice because youll jet an argument no matter which team you choose. So far in this young season, Davis has beaten Bountiful (21-but lost to Layton 20-- The Braves, however, defeated a good Roy team 3 to show they, too, have potential. Clearfield has been mighty tough, Layton is strong at 1 and Viewmont has been coming on strong so its back to the original formula of flipping a coin. This may seem like an easy way out for a new prep but theres no other way of evaluating the teams writer this early in tne season. ?' 20-1- T DON'T CALL THE AIRPORT! Offensively, the Darts Dushed across three touchdowns two by speedy Jepp Webster, senior hbuck v. he pelted the pigrkir 15 times for 83 yards Defensively, the Darts put the skids to the Braves offense by allowing only a net 5 yards rushing the first half. We werent ready lor Davis," said Waite. I think we took them too lightly, especially its defense, and just spun our wheels the first half. But you have to give Davis credit, as we had the ball only three times the first half. offense is engineered by senior Bountifuls multi-prquarterback Richard Welling, a smart signal caller who can throw the oval with the best of them. The Braves have a corps of receivers in Ken Hosking, 3, tight end, Larry Prigmore and Doug Angus. Hosking caught five passes against Davis, one for a conversion. touchdown and one for a Bountifuls backs are small, but fast. Tommy Hiiteo &.'d Bill Speaks will carry the load at tailback while big Mark Dickerson who rammed for 130 yards in 17 carries from his fullback position comprise the Braves running backs. and Angus also play defense along with Prigmore Sheldon Bagley, Greg Bangerter, Cliff McMillan, Kent Waters and others. Davis coach Jay Cullimore relies on three signal callers seniors Jim Hess and Pat Benton along with junior Ryan Hill. All play in the Dart defensive secondary as well. Brian Keefner, Bob Payne and Matt Gregory will be running from the halfback posts while fullbacks Kelly Beckstrom and Steve Criddle will be called on for the short gains. We dont throw a lot, but when we do we have some fine receivers on the other end, said Cullimore. Well throw to our halfbacks as well as the ends and this gives us good versatility. While grabbed the spotlight last Friday, the rest of the county didnt seem to mind since losing suddenly became stylish. and at Layton Layton was tripped by West 13-Viewmont was nipped 3 at Skyline and Clearfield was bombed 4 at Bonneville. After these three teams opened with wins a week earlier, maybe a case of overconfidence set in too early. At least thats the way Clearfields Jack Hannum has it pegged. I dont think we were ready to go up there and play football, he laments, we played poorly and made a lot of mistakes. 1 still feel good, he says, well just have to adjust and make sure we re ready to play each week. There will be no personnel changes for the Falcons, with solid support still behind quarterback Brian Johnson. The biggest plus continues to be the running backs, with Robbie Richeson, who scored a against Bonneville to give his club a short-livelead, and Joe Garcia expected to be joined this week by Rodney Neville, another stellar performer. As for Viewmont, the Vikings are now 1 with Region Three schools, beating East in the opener before losing a thriller, and heartbreaker, to Skyline one of the touts in football this season. One-on- e against Region Three Isnt bad. Coach Monte Jones, in his first year, is obviously going to have to count on the running ability of talented Taiki Skedros and the quarterbacking of junior Kevin Hess. Defensively, things look sound, with the likes of a senior nucleus consisting of Tim Eden, Brad Rosser, Roger Berry, Kent Tingey, Bill Kent and Kirk Green. much to At Layton, the West High nemesis continues the chagnn of Coach Gary Hansen. Last year the Falcons nearly knocked off the eventual state champions, and this year the outcome was a mere touchdown. But the battle wasnt a classic far from it. Both teams made repeated mistakes and each side had ample opportunity to win. West took a 0 halftime lead, but Curtis Page danced on an end sweep for a touchdown as Layton surged ahead 6 in the second half. That lead was shortlived, however, as West got the days final score to cinch the win immediately thereafter. Quarterback Ben Bubak was a bright spot for Layton, although several pinpoint passes were, dropped and his protection was somewhat leaky. The immediate analysis on Layton is the Lancers still possess the capability of fielding one of Utahs best after jhq. kinks are worked out. tjnscamqigp I e 3 0 t I I i IMH 3-- 4-- o For Airline Tickets at Airport Prices Call ot TpiiCwO OURS, INC . two-poi- 295-34- 43 Specialist In Group and Intflvidual Travel 88 West 500 South, Bountiful it cTmmBs V 163 S.
