fired into by a crowd on th the estreet street the regime regiment ut fired into the crowd and a number were killed and wounded 10 p m at this thia hour the excitement cit ement attending the terrible shooting by the sixth regiment la is still fierce and the crowd OB on baltimore street and for several squares from the south each way is on the increase the side bide walks are almost impassible in front of the middle pollee police station on north street nearly opposite the city hall where most of the dead and wounded have been taken the way is blocked with an excited mass eager to learn the names of the unfortunate men in tn this station there are gre now lying eight dead aar two wounded the wildest rumors are afloat regarding the number of 0 killed one is that a number of women were vere killed and borne off po m the depot at camden station caught fire and it was ro reported ported cleaned out gut lut but was extinguished with but little damage the telegraph office was cleaned out but it was the dispatchers office on the station platform and not the office in the main buil buli building dingo all the baltimore and ohio wires have been cut NEW 20 late tate last evening a meeting of firemen and brakemen was waa held in Hor neville at the close of which a message was sent to the superintendent of the erie railway notifying him that thab the men on the wewt west su bua s que hanna and buffalo adiv division islon ision had resolved work at one 1141 info ingo the proceeded at one to Hor horned neville ille arriving there this morning found that the strikers had quit work and had taken measures to prevent any train past passengers engers or freight from leaving or passing through Hor neville east or west simultaneously the brakemen and switchmen at da ri lamanca alamanca on the western division quit work and when mr begga isi eggs the superintendent of that d division jai D who nad had started out from dunkirk for Hor neville with a special train arrived in salamanca his engine was cut loose from the train and put into the engine house and strikers notified him that no engine or train would be permitted to pass salamanca at aldover andover station stations on the western division one ol 01 the striking firemen took engine 22 1 and went out on the road without orders or permission on from the company and on the time of the train intending he said to go to Hor neville at four this afternoon the strikers committee handed to superintendent wright a document containing the demands on behalf of the firemen il remen brakemen switchmen 3 and trac trae track kmen men that all mendis mondis men discharged for taking part in any meeting or going as committee to new york shall be reinstated brakemen to receive 2 per day switchmen V 2 head switchmen track men in yards igo trac kmen on sections to reee rece eive and pay no rental for the companas comp anys grounds except for agreement firemen to have the sa same me rates of pay as they received prior to july 1877 and month monthly ly passes to be continued the same bame as before and passes to be issued to brakemen and switchmen these demands were at once communicated to receiver jewett at new york the reduction in the wages by the erie railway company of ten per cent on july lat 1877 applied I 1 only to the above classes or of employees who were not affected by the reduction of the previous year and with this reduction in effect the train and road hands on the ene erie railway now receive higher compensation than any other eastern railroad late in june when a committee of train men visited new york in relation to the reduction of july they were kindly received by Rec receiver eiver elwer jewett and the necessity and propriety of the reduction explained to them which after a few days deliberation they apparently accepted cep cop ted and the men continued at the their ir posts with the exception of the known incendiaries who were dischar discharged gede gedo all classes of men on the erie railroad have been treated by the company with consideration their pay is not only reasonable but liberal for the times and if there are any employees ex pressing dle die dissatisfaction satis faction the receiver is ready to pay them off promptly and hire other men to take their places and he expressed his determination mi nation to carry out the order of july to the letter the erie company have arran arranged ed to have its through passengers at senke m and baggage carried tip vip via the new e w york central railway till its ita own trains resume runn nunn at lewiston at 6 p m on thursday from him hira it is learned that the regular cavalry and lewi ton volunteers pursued and overtook the indians on tuesday jim reuben levy and several other indians acted as scouts they came up with the indians near nean Weiser camas ground amid very much undergrowth the indians tired upon the scouts and killed levy and one other and wounded reuben another was shot through the lungs mcconville with his eighteen men was in advance and in a position of much danger the indians being concealed in the timber on either side of them mcconville soon saw the regulars fleeing the indian scouts through their tactics drew the attention of the hostiles ho stiles so as to let mcconville and his men out of the snap and seeing that the whole force of regulars had taken to flight he found it necessary to follow them rather than suffer his handful of men to be cut off the whole pursuing force returned ing J josephs men masters of the situation all the command had re crossed to the south side of clearwater and were to move to lapwai except under throckmorton who with artillery are to hold the position until colonel greens from boise loins joins them will return to lapwai and was informed that he intended move north to the spokane country the volunteers will soon leave the field and return to ta this place and be disbanded hunter says no one can foretell whether or not the war is ended many of the indians who have surrendered are reservation indians and acknowledge that they fought with joseph they are to be brought to lapwai for trial no one am there is great demand for wagons to take infantry to the front A portland press dispatch bays says prior to the adjournment of the grover commission senator saulsbury stated that grover did no not t desire to put himself on the stand but if any member of the commission desired to ask him any questions touching the matter under consideration be he was willing to answer honestly no desire being
