Gordon Sorensen Table Dusting Starts Career A'V gSw .r; .Jgyfr V Furniture stores across the nation are basically family companies because retail selling is on a personal basis, says J. Gordon Sorensen. Mr. Sorensen, secretary-treasure- r of South East Furniture, 2144 S. Highland Dr. (1100 East), was voted president of the Utah Furniture Assn, recently. My family has always been in the furniture business, he says. He was born in Ephraim in 1918, and moved to Salt Lake City when he was a boy. Thwi Starts Retail Operation His father, who nad a store in Ephraim, started a retail operation at the Sugar House location. Though I was just a kid, I started in the business too. 1 Mr. began at the ground level as a table leg duster, Artist sketch shows exte !or of Sugar Loaf Cafe In Cedar City after $10O,JOO remodeling project Buys S.L. Ordinary income and thus twice as much tax. Or so asserted IRS. Courts Opinion The tax court noted that the taxpayer had always been a farmer, that he honestly thought he could not realize the true value of the family farm other than through subdividing it, that the improvements he made were the minimal improvements required by local subdivision law and that he did not buy additional land to replace the parcels of land which were sold nor did he construct any buildigs on the land. He did no advertising in connection with the subdivision, and the real estate agent who handled the subdivision did very little. Capital Gains The couit concluded that, taking the specific facts involved, the taxpayer was not in the leal estate business, even though he was engaged in subdividing real property, and that his gam from the sale of the subdivided land could be taxed as capital gain. Moral: Even after the meek inherit the earth, they had better be careful or IRS will try to take most of it away from them in income taxes. We are unique in that we do our own advertising, instead of having a department within the store or ad agency do it. We think we are closer to our merchandise and can do a better job. And he proudly claims that South East sells more volume from one location than any store west of the Mississippi.
