Andra Lazenby, Secretary Reporter OPEN BURN WINDOW'APRL 18 TO MAY 17 The Open Burn Window for 1998 is set for April 18 through May 17, as determined by the Utah County Fire Marshall. Residents of Payson, Santaquin and Genola may burn during this time frame if they meet the following requirements: 1. Call (2876) to find out if its a burn day. Even though these dates are set aside for Utah County residents to burn, if the air quality index is at a level that would be harmful, residents of the county cannot burn. 2. No burning within 50 feet of any structure. 3. Have all vegetation cleared within a 10 foot radius of fire. 4. Have a garden hose connected to city water supply in case of an emergency. 5. No burning of tires, plastic or petroleum products. 6. Fire must be attended by a competent adult at all times. 7. Absolutely no burning at night. We would ask if you are planning to burn that you would be considerate of your neighbors, be aware of smoke drifting towards and in your neighbors homes. If the fire department is asked to respond, and if it is determined that the fire is a nuisance, the fire department will extinguish the fire. Residents in the unincorporated areas of the county need to call the Sheriffs Office at 3434130 and give their name and address of where they are burning. They may be asked to give their burn permit number, which they should have obtained prior to burning. If you have any questions, please call: 2 Payson - Steve Spencer, 4654990 or 0 or 361-71Santaquin - Shayne Bott, 3 Genola - Dan Mindar, Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Payson, Santaquin and Genola Fire Departments Remember when we accepted the weather as it came? We looked outside and if it looked like rain, we put on a jacket, picked up an umbrella and went about our own activities. I never remember hearing much about a weather forecast, let alone about why the elements were working themselves into a frenzy on any particular day. I think thats one thing I get out of a vacation. We pick a week when the weatherman thinks we might have good weather, we pack up and go somewhere. If it rains, so what? If the wind blows, we grin and bear it. Back then, in the good old days, November to January was usually cold and wintry with snow, cold, and storm running races with each other. We always had a January thaw, sometimes between December 25 and February 1, or some such dates. Then came blustery March followed by showery April and May with her flowers. June, July and August seemed like the hot months. (I do remember Mother telling me that the year she was born, 1912, it snowed on July 4 in dear old Payson! Was she imagining things, remembering some story wrong, or just trying to make me feel a little better over some crazy weather?) Whoops, my telephone just rang again and threw my thoughts off course. I forgot February with its iffy weather. I remember delivering Valentines in an inch or, so of snow or going in my shirt sleeves! On to September, another iffy month. If it doesnt snow, it might be warm and sunny. If it isnt warm, we might have windstorms. If nothing else, we will be roasting to death in unseasonable heat. Then comes October with her autumn leaves. This year has been different. We have something called El Nino to blame! If it snows, its El Nino; if its rains, its El Nino; if the wind blows, guess what, its El Nino! The earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes are all blamed on El Nino! Someone even became so upset, he offered to call the Mexican Embassy and have them come to take El Nino back! If my memory of what little Spanish I ever didnt know is correct, El Nino translates into "little boy"! Well, Ive seen little boys who could get into a lot of mischief, but this is ridiculous! Of course, I would never question the U.S. Weather Service! Maybe 1 can blame my mischievous telephone call on El Nino and get away with it. Do you suppose what would work? I have my doubts, too! There is one thing for certain, El Nino or not. It seems weve had an especially wet winter. While I was complaining about the low clouds and the wet conditions, Better Half suddenly made use of his sense of humor. "I need to teach the horses to swim!" "No, build them a raft!" "No! Ill teach them to swim. They can swim to "P" Mountain. Theyll be safe there!" Well, there you have it a choice. Blame El Nino and call the Embassy. Teach your animals to swim to "P" Mountain. Grin and bear it. Or choose one or more of the above. But, I believe I have a better idea. Lets all call off the day for lack of interest, batten down the hatches, and hibernate until we have bright, sunny days! And dont forget to turn off the telephone!
