Show The Payson Chronicle, March 6, 1996, Page 2 Victim Of Flesh-eatin- g Disease In Serious Condition In a telephone conversation with the Chronicle February 28, Lanaya Wright, secretaiy at the University of Utah Medical Center, Salt Lake City, said that Payson resident Curtis Pitts is in serious condition, "but has much improved." Pitts has, for the past month, been battling a relatively rare bacterial disease that eats the flesh. He was transferred from Mountain View Hospital in Payson to the University of Utah Medical Center on January 31 when rapid spreading of the disease became apparent. The disease is caused by the same bacteria associated with strep throat and becomes a flesh-eatimenace in about two to three cases a year in Utah. of the public affairs department Denises Doodles by Denise Windley Thirty-five-year-o- ld ng Girls State Applications Due March 8th Attention Payson High School juniors of the female gender, it is time to get your applications in for Girls State 1996. In his endeavor to slump his image into an status, he swayed just the opposite. He, maybe unintentionally, gave Pearl Jam some of the best publicity money doesnt have to buy. At least his money, anyway. In a sense, he pulled a Madonna. Shame on you, Eddie. Pearl Jam has to be one of the greatest contributors to the music world today which stems from the noble Rock & Roll bom in the 1950s. On my list of favorites, they rank at about number five, right between The Smashing Pumpkins and Tori Amos, not far down from The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and Bob Marley. I even like Pearl Jam more than my childhood favorite, (the late) Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company! Eddie Vedder is an awesomely talented musician and Ive admired Pearl Jam ever since they first hit the music scene some years ago. This band, along with many others, rescued music listeners across the land from that nauseating Poison and Cinderella glamour rock of the 1980s. They assisted in the restoration of "stomachable rock music for the 1990s. At first, while feasting my eyes upon this festive musical feast last week, I was impressed by his honesty in speaking, what seemed to be, his true feelings; and not wasting time going through the proverbial list of "Thanks, MTV, for running my video (through television sets and the heads of many gullible teens, and adults, too)" and "Thanks, Producer, for giving that break I needed (to enable me to become so incredibly, filthy rich)." But after some thought, I realized that he, in his stage act, became just like g the phonies he condemns. If Eddie Vedder truly thought that Grammy Awards were for posers and posers only, hed have not gone. all-ti- Such-and-su- ch high-flyin- 1 2 South Main The Payson Chronicle at 12 South Main, Payson, Utah. He more or less said that the award didnt mean diddley-squa- t, that he only attended the event for amusement, blah, blah, blah. He could be right. The award probably doesnt mean a thing. Many recipients of these types of honors are selected for bounteous sales or political reasons, not always for being most talented. But, if it did in fact mean very little to this Pearl Jam gem, and he really was adamant about not being attached to such silliness, why did he even show up? In his attempt to become a shining example for the alternative music crowd, to stray far, far away from all the show biz foo-foMr. Vedder only brought himself closer to just that He could have gotten up to the podium and cried, "Hey you peons out there praising me like Im some sort of king, youll never come close to feeling as cool as I think I am," and have conveyed the same message in an even more straightforward 226-304- 0, richest whose pleasures are the cheapest.
