Show The "Land Ot Morning Calm '' Visited Hatchers Visit by Connie Sample Bob and Jackie Hatcher and daughter Melissa, of Murray, have recently experienced one of the most unique events of their lives. They visited for two weeks in Korea, not as the ordinary tourists, but they actually lived in the homes of two separate Korean families Bob Hatcher of Murray displays commendation medal he received for his military service in Korean War. Hatcher family has returned from a visit to South Korea. The Hatchers have been taking part in an exchange program sponsored by Friendship Force of Utah. Approximately two hundred and fifty Americans and the same number of Koreans took part in the exchange. Upon arriving in Korea, the Hatchers were met at the Chosun Hotel by the family with which they were to spend their first week of Korean living. They were Mr. Yeong and Mrs. Chin and here was one of the first things that they became aware of. The wife keeps her maiden name and the children take the fathers last name Several of the most interesting Korean customs were different than the Hatchers expected. Removing ones shoes before entering a house was hard to remember at first. after But, tells Mrs. Hatcher, we saw the beautiful, shining lacquered floors and how clean the house remains, it soon became an idea that we wanted to use in our home. They were told by friends that they would lose weight while they were in Korea. Not true! Not true! states Mrs. Hatcher, I gained over ten pounds. In their first home the wife never sat down at the table with them and the children ate at another table. In the second home, the wife had a cook and so she joined them at the table for most of the meals. The one custom that Americans have the hardest time getting used to is that each person does not have their own individual plate on which they have their own individual portions In Korea, each person may have their own rice bowl, but when it comes to other foods, one simply takes the food from the common serving bowl directly to ones mouth However, since it is understood that if you touch a morsel with your chopsticks, it is yours. So it really is not an unsanitary custom. With every meal, the Koreans serve Kimchi. This essential part of the Korean diet is a highly seasoned and fermented pickle of cabbage, turnip, cucumber, and other vegetables. It provides a large number of the vitamins in the Korean diet. With almost every meal, you are served your own individual bowl of rice which along with the Kimchi is an excellent combination. Koreans eat more vegetables than any other Oriental people and they eat three hearty meals daily. The average breakfast is soup, fish or meat, Kimchi, rice and usually an additional grilled fish. A dinner party might have a bland beef soup, another highly seasoned soup with vegetables, followed by a fish course, beef or short ribs, a pork dish and fruit. When the children are allowed to have snacks, it is usually fruit. One of the dishes one Korean family served the Hatchers which they still enjoy is Bulgogi. According to Jackie it is easy to make and is one food Occidental tastes could enjoy. At the end of the meal, the hostess often brings a bowl of pears or apples to the table, peels and sections them, and serves her guests and family. They are wonderful and were the best pears that weve ever eaten, say the Hatchers. Mrs. Hatcher and daughter Melissa, who is an eighth grader at Jr. wore the traditional Korean dresses, called the Humble, which were presented them by their Korean hosts in Korea. The interesting history of the Humble is that when the Japanese conquered Korea, the women wished to appear as unappealing as possible to the conquerors, and therefore, the unattractive Humble was invented and worn. dress The costume is a with the bottom similar to an extra The ties to long the shirt are bound around the top of the chest (without benefit of a bra) to flatten and bind down the bosom A small jacket is placed over the skirt and completely disguises the female figure. When they saw the braces on her teeth, they really didnt know quite what to think as braces are unusual there. They may grow up thinking this is part of the standard equipment for a teen-age- r in the United States, laughs Melissa. The Korean people told us how mature Melissa is for her age, states Mrs. Hatcher. We finally learned that in Korea, children are considered one-yeold at birth, so we learned to give her age in Korean a shallow stream. This is a country of rapid transition and you witness an industrial revolution as you travel Korea for vice veterans to fare. of their the air price just He spoke to several people who were there on this program and first found they were receiving class treatment. The Hatchers are now sending copies of this program to local VW and VA offices so others may get additional information. The Demilitarized Zone that divides the Republic of Korea in the south from the Communist North was visited. A According to the Hatchers, it across it. They traveled into and through a hostile area and the road over which the bus travelled had been mined in the past. Photo taking was only allowed at certain points. Persons in this area are requested not to wear blue jeans which, for some reason, are said to excite a lively negative response from the terms. They visited four universities and were impressed by the lack of litter because the students take pride in their schools. In the grade schools, the students even stay after school and clean the school. In the homes they visited each student in the family had their own desk and study area. Study has the first priority for they are an ambitious and hardworking people. The hope to have one student from each family eventually stay with them and attend the University of Utah. Melissa visited a grade school and was introduced to each class. The students were eager to have their names written in English and so, in Korea, there are many precious pieces of paper with Melissas handwriting on them. Bob and Jackie visited a girls high school in Taegu. The main courses were to enable each student to gain some type of gainful occupation. They were presented a beautiful sample of calligraphy, an art that school excels in. Mr. Hatcher was presented a medal and commendation for outstanding service during the Korean War by the president of the Korean Veterans. The award was made in the grand ballroom of the Chosun hotel in Seoul, at a cocktail and dinner party at which six Americans and twenty Canadians were honored. Mr. Hatcher became aware of a program which will be of interest to other Korean War veterans.
