While the Santas seemed willing to spend some time individually greeting children, they were stalked by officials of the stores who will benefit from Santas presence, who were apparently in a hurry to get the jolly gent seated inside where his presence would do the most good. For obvious reasons. I was fooled or not But I was certainly convinced for that moment anyway that there was a Santa Claus. And today I believe in the way that Frances Church discussed the topic - yes, there is and there always will be a Santa Claus. I've three nieces who add now to the brightness and joy of Christmas. I learned later that my attempts to pretend I was asleep didnt really fool anyone, but she let me get away with it because she knew that sooner or later I would fall asleep. It didn't matter on that particular Christmas Eve. My folks proved for all time that parents really are smarter than their offspring. Our family, as usual, paid a visit to some friends that night And lo and behold, when we returned, you can probably guess who had already been there. The city cannot legislate morality, but it can prevent negative situations. Valley (West Dec. View, 4, 1980) This is a quote made by West Citys Valley Assistant Attorney Mike Hutchings concerning a proposed law restricting go-g- o dancing in West Valley. I would like to ask everyone to read this statement several times and to ponder it. Statements like these frighten me greatly. The cannot part legislate morality plies an idea im- that America was based on and shows a recognition of the freedom of religion concept. In other words, that no one religion can impose its sense of morality on the public in general, as the specifics of morality are determined by ones religion. The part negative situation is an attempt at switching terms not meaning. It seems to me we need to consider who and, more important, why, would anyone call dancing a negative situation. About the only way it could be considered negative is on moral grounds. As far as Im concerndaned, the loss of cing in West Valley (or go-g- o go-g- o anywhere else) is nothing one way or the other. What I am concerned about is the attitude that includes a need to rephrase its what about, and I would especially expect more honesty from persons holding that theyre speaking for the cause of morality, if they feel that it is right to legislate morality, then say so. This idea of legislating morality is similar to the attitudes that plunged Europe into the Dark Ages and created in- numerable - HUNTER.
