It was named for the hero killed at the Alamo the previgus year. But the outpost, situated in Brown's hole in what became eastern Utah, was also called "Fort Misery." It was said to be the "meanest fort in the West." To a trapper, a valley was a hole. Consequently many of the early designations in Utah were labeled such names as Ogden's Hole and Brown's Hole. Women and it was some of these humped carriers that hauled merchandise into what became Utah. The camel venture, however, did not last long. The feet of the animals, durable in desert sands, were cut the by sticks and stones of mountain passes.
