Typical of the meeting places of the day was this temporary, but first statehouse, while the law was the only one passed in 1849 by .the legislature, according to the most accurate infor- - .mation on tile with the Utah State Historical Society. There were a number of ordi.tances pissed by that first lion, however, before it adjourned on March 2, 1850. Included was an ordinance "concerning . - fare" section declaring that the assessor and collector shall "In distress the widow, and the fatherlesa, nor Oppress the honest poor." Bounty Paid on Wolves From the Utah Historical Quarterly, we also learn that nhe ordinance of Jan. 14, authorizing a bounty on wolves takes on more meaning when it is remembered that, during the winter of 1848-4a hunting campaign had been organized for slaughtering vermin, and that oftentimes during the winter of 1849-5- 0 while the general assembly was in session, the howling of 'wolves' made the night 'hideous' in Great Salt Lake City." (A foctnote points out that it rosy be observed that - these 'wolves' were not wolves at all g from the but East, the Mormons had no distinctive name for a new species of animal," the note- states). An important feature of an act passed on Jan. 15 was the ereation of a Committee of Public Works in connection with construction of a dam across the Jordan River. The measure approving the project was passed in response to a recommendation of.
