People often came in large hay wagons, with lunches packed in everything from tubs to clothes baskets. on the grounds there we re amusements galore. There were bath houses five large swings and two giant striders. These were made by placing in the ground a large pole, which soared nearly forty feet into the air. From the pole long ropes hung down to within four feet of the ground. A stick on the end of each rope permitted a person to hang onto " as the arms of the strider spun around. There 'also was a whirligig, consisting of a revolving wagon wheel on a post. with ,"b o x seats"on the end of each of four planks extending from the wheel, Lindsey Gardens also offered two croquet courts, a baseball bowdiamond and brush-roofe- d Venders sold ery for homemade ice cream, cakes and soft drinks. Ice for freezing was gathered from nearby ponds in the winter, and then stored in sawdust for summer time use. Holmes, spring of 1849:- He located on what is still, known eie Holmes creek, a mile and a half southwest of the city. In 1850, William Kay, Edward Phillips and John H. Green settled on what later became known as Kayst Creek, about two miles northwest of the present center of Kaysville, Severai , other men; with their families, come into the area the some year William Kay was appointed to preside over ilia 0 0,41 ,., , - 1 , settlement in 1851. The settlement was first known as Kay's Ward: About 1858 there was an attempt to change the name to "Freedom," but by advice of Pres. Brigham Young the people retained the old name.
