Show DESERET NEWS AND TELEGRAM, 2A By Anderson and - MARMADUXE- Iteming Salt laic City, Wednesday, May 11 1960 Dewey's Partner Defends Fee SHOP IN ANY WASHINGTON (UPI) Thomas E. Deweys law partner Jumped to his feet at a congressional hearing Wednesday to offer an explanation I of why a gas pipeline company paid their law firm fees totalpe-- 1 ing 8173,613 in a two-yea- r riod. :i The unexpected interruption by Attorney Everett L Willis came as Robert W, Lishman, counsel for a House subcommittee, was questioning federal Power Commission Chairman Jeromes K Kuykendall about various legal fees shelled ' out by utility firms. Lishman delved Into the sum of $173,613 paid In 1957 and 1958 by the Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America to the New York law linn of Dewey, Bushby, Palmer and Wood the firm of the former I New York governor. He questioned whether this money was for representing! the firm before the'FpC or for helping ta fight an anti-trusuit, .implying it would be Improper to attempt to pass on to gas consumers the costs of the latter Lishman asked Kuykendall and FPC Counsel Willard if it would be correct to state that representatives of Dewey's-fir- m appeared before the FPC only twice during j that period. Rep. Steven B. Derounlan said a senior partner of Dewey's firm was in the audience - and the question should be directed to him. At this point .Willis- - Jumped up from his seat in the front row and strode forward as though he was ready to testify. Chairman Oren Harris (D-- 1 Arkf told Willis he was out of place. Willis remarked that Deweys company actually had taken part in 190 days of FPC and then hearings in 1957-58- , returned to his seat Willis later made available to reporters copies of a letter he sentJCuykendall April 18 which branded as false a published charge the firm received fees from Natural Gas Pipeline even though it didnt represent the company inf or-mal FPC proceedings.
