( Santa didn't let me down Warren Ottley, Salina, Utah At this time of year, we are often urged to write or tell about our hap-- ; piest Christmas. Some of us, who haveenjoyedscoresofjoyousChrist-- ; mases, find that a little difficult Not that its hard to remember them (we ; ; wouldntadmititevenifitwere),but i to select one from the many is a daunting process. One that is not earth shaking, but I memorable for me, occurred when I ! couldnt have been more than seven. I was still under the spell of the ! ubiquitous Santa Claus and doing t everything possible to impress my parents of my goodness.y c ! We were poor and lived in a little country town where Santa sometimes ; arrived on the once a day train. The kids watched, anxiously for his ar-- j! rival and when they didnt see him ;! disembark, they were highly puzzled about his showing up moments later I in the local general store. i . !; j I Iwaspromptedbymyloving-bu- t practical - parents to be sensible in . my request to SantS because of his continuing heavy work load. I tried earnestly to follow their counsel. So, I decided after the usual toy, candy and orange were taken care of that I would ask for a warm pair of flannel pajamas. The cold winters and lack of central heating made warm clothing for both day and night a neces- . sity. Santa acknowledged the request and big with a hearty that confident him I left feeling hug. the appropriate wheels were in motion. But, on Christmas morning I was very disappointed to find nothing in the stocking or under the tree that jresembled pajamas. Could I have hot been 'specific enough in detailing my order to Santa? Could he not have understood how reasonable I was to order pajamas instead of a lot ho-ho-- of useless folderol that would not last a week? Surely, Santa had fouled up this time! Two days lata was Sunday and we attended the usual church services. When we came home, my mother suggested 1 look under the Christmas tree. There I found a package with a note attached: My Dear Little Friend it began, Im really sorry I didnt leave your pajamas on Christmas Eve. Things got a little hectic at the North Pole, and my helpers got a couple of orders mixed p. Yours, somehow, got left on the Warehouse floor and they werent discovered until I had taken off. My staff told me about the goof as soon as I got home, but I was really tired and it took me a day or so to rest up. But I made another trip today, and here are your pajamas. Sure hope you had a Merry Christmas! Love, Santa. Weil, my faith in everything up- right and good was restored. It didnt occur to me to question about the pieces of the same pajama material lying on Mothers sewing machine, nor the fact that Santas handwriting was similar to my Dads - - it didnt bother me a whit. A Thought to Ponder Some people will believe nothing but what they can comprehend; and there are but few things that such are able to comprehend. -- Evremond . . We Know Youve Been Good... Especially To Us! Merry Christmas and many thanks for your kind support. t 1 '1 3 |
